Really? Thats despite all the tests with file transfers, rendering pictures, encoding MP3s and framerates in games showing no or very little difference and certainly nothing approaching Windows XP performace?
Thats because you looked for the wrong thing. Try looking at benchmarks.
I can tell you because unlike you, I obviously have a clue. Did you test file transfer rates? Did you test how long it took to encode an audio track to MP3? Did you run FRAPS on a game to see how many FPS it could do in each or did you just slap it on? If the latter is what you did, you've confirmed what I said about it just appearing to be as fast as XP - something very easily done in the start menu for example by a mere single registry entry alteration to change the delay before showing a new menu.

The thing I feel you have missed is..... the vast majority of users do not care about any of that.

Really most people don't really care how long an mp3 takes to encode or how fast files transfers, games are a little more important but is far more hardware depenant anyway. but virtually every other benchmark test no one really expects an instant reponse.

Where as for UI operations people expect that instant response, and people get anoyed if it does't, where as people don't if it takes 1min longer to zip some files up.

children! children! calm down. I have to agree with the comment above that most people don't care about O/S speed all they want is a computer that works without BSOD's, lock ups and unexplained shutdowns. Microsoft roll out a new O/S every now and again at great cost to the must have brigade.
I was bought Win 7 as a birthday prezzy so I now run a dual boot system on two HDD with XP and Win 7, what have I gained with Win 7? well I had to upgrade my graphics card to achieve the full benefit of some functions , my existing webcam would not work with it, had to buy a new one .At this moment in time ( a month on ) I can't tell if 7 is faster than XP but it is nice to use and seems less fiddley, I like the interface it's different. I have used all the the incarnations from 95 missing out Vista to Win 7. My opinion for what it's worth,,,,,,,, get a Mac and use OSX

Qualify W7 as being more stable, easy:-

Vista installed for 3 months - 4 rebuilds because it screwed up.
W7 installed from Beta and then upgraded to commercial release - 0 rebuilds in 3 months and still running well.

If I didn't find it more stable why would I have said I did?

Which says more about your knowledge than the OS

I have pleanty of knowledge thank you very much - 22 years in IT doing devlopment, testing, infrastructure & OS support, beta testing for 3rd parties.

Why are some people so rude? I make a valid point (which might not match your experience but is still valid) and get told I am talking "Bollox". I back up my comment with real world experience and get told I am ignorant (in so many words) when you have no knowledge of my experience.

Never mind - I wish you a happy new year anyway.

I upgraded my home PC from XP to W7 and it is a very nice operating system but to be honest, not a 'must have ' in my opinion. I run Vista in my office and that works fine for me. Not much point upgrading from Vista to W7 in my opinion.

Everyone says their experience is like yours when questioned. Obviously this country has 40million+ IT 'pros'.
The fact is, Win7 is NOT more stable than Vista, and you still did not quantify your comment.
There is no difference stability wise.

So come on people, what is so much better about 7 than XP?

    Serious question.

I tried Vista, it was so slow, I dumped it after about 2 weeks.
