I think the problem is that a lot of stores (M&S, NEXT, Primark etc) do give refunds even on sale goods and so many people expect the same policy in other stores..
I'm quite surprised to learn about Debenham's policy on sale goods (so thanks for the heads-up).
I think at the very least, the sales assistant should have mentioned their policy to you before you actually paid.
M&S sometimes do 'Manager's specials' on goods that have been returned and are one-offs. These are usually marked with an 'S' both on the garment care label and the price ticket and they are on a special rail with a notice explaining 'no refund'.
Every time I've bought something like this the assistant has advised me that it can't be returned (unless found to be faulty).
However, that doesn't help you much, does it?
Were you offered a credit note?0 -

I thought that meant it had been offered for sale in the Staff Shop (which M&S are renowned for) and had not sold, which is usually why those items are exceedingly cheap. My Mum's got a real knack for finding those rails0 -

Yes it was refunded onto a gift card so not a totaly loss and I believe if I had paid with a Debenhams card I would have received a full refund onto my card, but I paid by Maestro.:rotfl: l love this site!! :rotfl:0 -
This makes joyful reading! Thanks for the entertainment0

Not rubbish at all, the vast majority of rag trade goods taken away from store and later returned are done so after the customer has used them to have a ragging good saturday night out in new kit they didn't want to pay for in the first place.
This appears to have gone on in the past. I don't know about other stores, however, Debenhams started putting the tags on the outer side of their expensive party wear and stated that if this was removed then no refund would be available (unless it was faulty). The occasional person thought they might get away with wearing an item, (they knew they might not wear again), on an evening out, with the tag still attached to the inner label, and then return it a couple of days later.
With regards to Debenhams refund policy, unless it has changed recently, Debenhams will allow you a refund over and above your statutory rights but only if you've paid by a Debenhams card. Otherwise, it's exchange only if the item has been reduced by 50% or more. I learned this at my own cost! It's wouldn't have not wouldn't of, shouldn't have not shouldn't of and couldn't have not couldn't of. Geddit?0 -
I don't understand this policy, surely if you took it back without the receipt and said it was a christmas present that didn't fit, they'd allow an exchange - unless of course they mark it ala Next? I don't shop in Debenhams as I've never found it an enjoyable experience but good to have another reason to avoid it!:DOne Debt vs 100 Days Challenge - £2000.00COMPLETED :j0
