Thanks for all the comments, what we have to remember is that they are not going to be using case studies from people on MSE, they have to show drama etc do the first families in both articles fit that bill.
I think that most people on MSE are grateful for what they have and make their money work as efficiently as possible whereas for those that haven't discovered MSE they may be aiming for bigger and better things and will never be happy with what they have.
A comment on the Mail article made me laugh, someone said their good friend was a millionaire and lived in a huge house with nice cars but was bemoaning his neighbour who had more money than him - just goes to show that some people are never happy.0 -
Its been a spendy week in the Elephant household.
Our rescue dog (who happens to be the size of a baby elephant) had a lump on her foot that seemed to be annoying her, so vet trip it was, she loves the vets which is good as the other dog doesnt. End result is that she has a lump/cyst that needs to be removed but could be something nasty so she is booked in on Monday for biopsy and then we will know what kind of operation she needs and how much needs to be removed. First visit was just a shade under £100 so christ knows what Mondays sedation and biopsy will be and then the op. We dont do insurance and never have done but we have savings that I can draw on - they may not have been for the dog but at least they are there.
Then on top of that we have had to spend out on DD's bedroom - I ordered her bed last weekend knowing her desk wouldnt fit (but knew DH could cut a bit off) but when we tried putting it up the wardrobe wouldnt fit either!!! I definitely measured right but I think they havent allowed for fancy bits on the headboard and footboard.
The bed couldnt go back as it was all out of its packaging and DD said she would rather have a nice bed than her wardrobe and desk so DH made the bed which is a very tight fit and wont ever move again and chopped her desk down - you wouldnt even know that it was once a bigger desk and we then had to go out and buy a new wardrobe, lucikly Argos had an offer on the size down from what she has currently for £99 so the old wardrobe will be used as shelves in her room and we have a new wardrobe to put up.
Our house is lovely but it is a basically a cottage so we have one large bedroom and 2 small bedrooms which of course many years ago were fine for families but as furniture grows and you need more things there isnt the room. DD's suggestion when we were pondering everything was to just build an extension!! I did remind her that would take months and not days and where would she sleep in the mean time!!
Its all spend especially as today my parents have been married for 40 years and we are going out for a family meal - there will be 18 of us!!!
Must reign the spending in next week.
Hope you are all having a good weekend.0 -

I love your DD's answer to your lack of space problems! Right answer but I don't think she factored in the actual cost of an extension! Youngsters eh!
