Realtek AC'97 Audio Programme

Hi there. Happy New Year to everyone. Can anyone help?
I've just looked at the size of my Realtek AC'97 (acer) Audio Programme and it has 5,823.00MB. This seems to be collosal!! Should I delete it to free up my very slow computer and then download a fresh one which might have a lot less MB's. Any advice please.

Is this the Audio driver package for your onboard sound? If so then it does seem large yes - but then agian if your laptop is slow - I dont think that this alone would slow it down (unless its the wrong driver anyway). There may be other things that are slowing it down

    That does seem very wrong
Id definitely uninstall it and install whatever driver IS required (Though the fact you can pull that information up says to me that its not a driver at all, but some form of 'sound software'perhaps?)

As for it being a very slow computer ~ how much RAM does it have?

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Post the log COMPLETE here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

Eh, last time I was at school (25 years ago) that did say 5823 ie around 6mb.

Go to Acer.co.uk and get the correct driver and uninstall the old one and then reinstall the new one.

If that file is 5GB it's certainly suspicious. Right click it and check the size by selecting properties and also scan it with your security programme.

Free antivirus security www.microsoft.com/security_essentials or www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus

Only install ONE of those if you don't have an antivirus program already.

  • Thanks for all the help everyone. I can understand now that 5,823.00MB is just under 6MB but when I look on my desktop in the Add or Remove Programme window and see that the other programmes running are stated as having 1.2MB, 20.4MB, 14MB etc etc. This one (Realtek AC'97) is the only one with a comma in it and with 4 figures which appears abnormal compared to the others which do not have this. Am I right to think that there is a problem?

I did contact Acer by email (found the email address on the Acer helpline website) but they can't help me because I did not buy the desktop in Canada or America!!!! (I bought it in the UK).

    Any advice is greatly received.
