This thread has encouraged me to keep a full and thorough spending diary for 2010. It seems you have spend a lot on books/DVD's etc etc but I bet if I add it up mine won't be as good as I think!!

Good luck on reducing your spends in 2010 noseofdisipline.

P.S. I have my idea of what the XXX might be and if I am right then maybe it might be a good idea to cut this to zero???!!!

Taking my frugal life on the road!
  • To put the spending in context I'm single, no dependants, and I live in a flat.

I didnt used to have boiler cover, but had a part break on me that cost about £300 to repair (the boilers not even that old). So I'm keeping that cover.

DVD rental is Lovefilm, with the occasional rental from Blockbuster/Virgin. I rent mostly Blu-Rays from them, so this has actually saved me money! I have cut my package back to 1 disc now though, so that bill should reduce.

I bought some exercise equipment to exercise at home rather than at the gym. Didnt quite realise it added up to that amount, but should start saving me money over time.

Food bill is absolutely ludicrous (I eat round my parents a lot too). I actually spent £1,018.35 on lunch at work. Some of that is me making my own lunch, but a lot was spending on sandwiches/Greggs etc, sometimes £7 or more a day, so I will try and cut that down!

Booze I'm not too concerned about. I only go out once or twice a month, its not every night. You add it up over the year and it will come to what looks like a scary number! I live four or so miles from town, so when its two am and your drunk and cold, walking home is not really an option.

Like I said, the Virgin Media is for TV, broadband, phone and V+. I cant think of ways to cut this down.

For this year, I'm going to try and read my own books that I havent read yet, instead of getting new ones. I'm going to try and re-watch my own DVD collection instead of buying lots of new ones. Going to try and get the food spending to under a grand for the year.
    Debt at 1/1/11 £7,049.75, now £6,682.12 at 9/3/11

Big up you for being diligent enough to break down your spending and the figures are fascinating reading over a year.

On the positive side.....look at all the crap your spending your money on....cut this down and look how much spare you'll have for the XXX stuff!!! ;)

What a brilliant thread - has really made me chuckle!
Noselfdiscipline well done for being honest - but I have to say a 4/5 mile walk is nothing really especially with a 'beer coat' on, so I guess you are not using the gym or gym equipment you paid for as 4/5 miles appears too much of a challenge!!

Have to say that your magazine spending made my OH feel better about himself as he is a fastford/retroford/classicford aholic but still doesn't spend anywhere near as much as you!!

Good luck in setting a new budget for 2010!

As others have said, a big pat on the back for posting and being honest. It is quite scary looking at it over the year isn't it (although not rocket science), but seeing it in black and white makes you think!

    All the best for 2010!

Well done noselfdiscipline. Thanks for your post.
In fact it takes a lot of discipline to keep such a detailed spending diary.
I have always believed people should choose what they spend their own money on. Everyone is different and a spending diary from someone else will look very different.
The point is you are solvent as your overspend is less than your SAYE and share purchases. - Well done.
    £1,900 - SAYE
    £220 - Shares through work

What about eliminating or reducing the money you just threw on the floor last year. I mean the:-
£886.04 - Overdraft interest and payments
    .
With your discipline with your spending diary I am sure if you turned your mind to managing your cash flow you could get rid of the overdraft part of it very quickly.
    What do you think?
