Do you mean large pieces of salt, like you would put down on a path? I got a huge bag at our local builders merchants. I cant remember how much it was, but it was cheap. Also Morrisons were doing bags for £5, but I dont know how big they were. All sold out in my area, so I cant check and the Builders Merchants is closed until Tuesday. HTH.

ooh not sure whether I mean large or small pieces, hadn't thought of that for making homemade moisture absorbers. Thanks for the tip though about getting some from local builders... but for the amount I need Morrisons sounds good and I can keep leftovers for pickling duties :D

The one from the builders merchants was huge. I was struggling to drag it by myself (when I got it out of the garage last week and it had been used), so it must have been at least 10 kgs maybe more. OH got it for me in the first place, but I could never have got it home myself ;)

Does doing this stop condensation on your windows?

Pots of salt/crystals/cat litter won't stop the condensation forming as this is caused when warm air hits cold glass and changes from a gas to a liquid...but it will absorb the excess water in the air.

Can I also point out that the "proper" crystals that come in these wee kits are often nothing more than calcium chloride...which is a common salt often used on the roads to prevent slipping. Therefore if you go to the builders' merchant you'll be buying almost the same product at a cheaper price.

Thanks Ally, but I don't quite have the space to store builders' merchant bags - but it's really useful to know :)

We tried salt when we had a caravan but found it rusted specks on taps etc. The next year we bought the containers ready filled but from then on refilled them with the clay (?) based cat litter. We did visit once over the winter to drain the collected water and replace the cat litter but it worked well and we never had any problem with damp at all. Mattresses, bedlinen and clothes were all fine.
Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot.

What about the wee packs of silica gel ( the ones that come with electrical products - I read in a forum about people putting a load of them in a tupperware and leaving in the car to stop the windows misting up - Then just drying them out in the microwave now and then. I have started collecting mine all up to see if it works.

Ooh that sounds good Amanda, though I might be worried about putting things in the microwave and them exploding  I had bad experience once with a boiled egg I tried to reheat and have gone off microwaves ever since :o.

I get condensation on my windows, but I prop a cloth on the glass and it seems to do the trick, use a plant pot to prop it up and also disguise it a bit.
