I have a house abroad and over winter we put salt down the loo's!
Never heard of it before but was told to do it to stop the water freezing and pipes bursting?
My salt in containers has gone solid in only a matter of days, the refill stuff I bought used to do the same thing, so I'm hoping its working.

  • That's a realy good idea.
I've been spending a fortune for the refills so will try some salt today.
Does the salt last as long as the crystals though.
It should certainly work out cheaper if it does.

Cat litter should be the natural, clay-based stuff - I used to use it in the kids trainers when they were teenagers - absorbs the pong a treat!! On a similar line, I think that charcoal might possibly work - not the self-lighting sort, as that's impregnated with smelly chemicals. Charcoal certainly absorbs smells.

If you're using little pots of cat litter about the place, be sure that no cats can find it - or they'll do what comes naturally!!

Have never used these crystals so forgive my ignorant question. Could you dry them out in the oven or in trays over a hot radiator and reuse them, or do they simply dissolve?

They dissolve into a liquid with the moisture that they absorbed. I've never heard of drying out the crystals, but I imagine that even if it were possible you would end up putting the water back into the air that you had just taken out.

I think I'm going to try salt, anyone know the cheapest place to buy? Last time I bought a small pack in Lidls, but I must be able to get larger packs from somewhere.

    Thanks :)

Do you mean large pieces of salt, like you would put down on a path? I got a huge bag at our local builders merchants. I cant remember how much it was, but it was cheap. Also Morrisons were doing bags for £5, but I dont know how big they were. All sold out in my area, so I cant check and the Builders Merchants is closed until Tuesday. HTH.

You reminded me that I put a bowl of salt near my window weeks ago, i've just checked it and it's gone solid so think it's doing what it should be. I've replaced it and will make a note of how long it takes this time. I must say though, it doesn't help my condensation much.
