with the Virgin Vegas flights . poor IFE , Rude staff , poor service , long queues at check in at McCarren ( over an hour last time ... they had only 2 desks for economy ) ..

Don't forget the other passengers drinking as much free booze as they can consume too!

With United we upgraded to the economy plus for not much at all (I think it was $69 for the international leg) and this made the flight far more comfortable. We flew back from SFO and it was fine doing this. If you're going to be making a couple of flights a year it might be worth buying their annual upgrade thing.

FYI although the seats were uncomfortable when we flew back last week, there was no queue for bagdrop at McCarren and we arrived there 3 o clock ish on a 90% plus full flight.

It's a difficult one - I'm swaying towards BA direct now, but I was going for Miles + Money with Virgin for £458 in Economy... less than just about anywhere else I have found.

BA was about £530 last time I checked, plus the extras to sit together, etc.

I was trying to work out if PE was worthwhile on Virgin; I currently have 37,000 Virgin miles but can't work out a cheap enough way around getting my flights in PE (cheap being under £1300 for the two of us); whether a companion flight is the answer or whether to buy an L class flight for us both and upgrade. Tis all a bit of a minefield really.

United have been quite expensive so far; I'm also very picky in that if I have to change flights, I don't want to be cramped up on a small plane for more than 1.5hrs / 2hours tops - hence why so far I've always tried to fly via LAX or SFO. Can anyone suggest anywhere else within 2hrs of Vegas that I could look at?

    So many dilemmas!

PE isn't worth it IMHO on the LGW->LAS flights - again the old plane thing...PE is totally worth it on the Airbuses, but not on the old planes they use on that route. We tried it once to LAS (when MaxJet went bust and we'd already been looking forward to not flying economy) and it was certainly better than economy, but we wouldn't waste the miles upgrading on that route - we'd much rather upgrade on a route with better planes. And we did have seats in the 'bubble' - so at least had the benefit of a small cabin which felt slightly special - had we had the PE seats downstairs, we would have been even less impressed. We flew PE to Australia on an Airbus and that was brilliant.

We've done Virgin direct twice - in Dec 2006 and May / June 2008... to be honest, it was fine both times for us. No (noisy) stag groups and no probs with IFE - we went because the price was good and we wanted to go direct.

Next time we go we are flying BA - for conveniance (LHR) and also just to see what it's like - i can't see there being much improvement (if any! - same seat config and less food from what i gather!) We got the flights free through the airmiles / tesco clubcard offer else i'd have happily gone indirect to save the cash! :)

For us, the three advantage's Virgin really have over BA are:
    1) Twilight checkin
    2) Earlier departure / arrival (outgoing and incoming!)
    3) Don't have to pay(!?!?) pre-check-in to choose your seats!

Due to personal reasons (location), we are in no desperate rush to fly Virgin again purely because Gatwick is too much hassle for us - i'd happily go indirect from Heathrow! (which we did last time using NWA, US Airways + Air France and the flight experience was no different to the Virgin flights we'd taken... apart from the AF flight gave everyone cheap champagne haha!) :)

FYI: News is floating around that as of January 15th, Planet Hollywood Resort / Casino will no longer be part of the Starwood Group... rumours are that HET (Harrahs) will be taking it over :)

I'd read that HET were trying to get their hands on it - I will be happy if they do as we're pretty HET loyal and I really like the casino at PH. :)

The only thing I will say is that MGM has south - mid-strip locked up, and HET has mid-mid North strip locked up...there aren't that many independents anymore which may not be the best thing for guests and players.

It's on the main Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning forum -if you look at the Vegas thread at/near the top of the listing - in the last post column there's sort of a blue box with a white > in it - if you click that you'll be taken to the last post in the thread (if you hover over it it says 'go to last post'.

Like others, I come in via a bookmark direct to this thread though...I normally come into it and then click on the last page.

HET bought out most of PlanetAladinwood debt mid last year, and have in effect been the owners since then. I have heard that they have already bought the place outright, but will take some time to intergrate it into the fold of the Caesars group.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
