Hi everyone im new to this, been selling on ebay bits and bobs but was thinking of getting into this wholesale idea but one question....

I understand you have to register as self employed, but does that mean you put it down on a working family tax credit form? I guess it does but how would you work out how many hours a week you work for?
Also when you fill out a tax return do you take into account expenses such as pertrol etc? How do you work out what to put for petrol?
    Sorry for all the questions!

    Hi

When I went Self Employed I rang up Tax Credits and told them that I was Self Employed and that I would be working x amount of hours a week, when I stopped being Self Employed I rang them up to tell them and it didn't change what we got each month as we were still in the same earning bracket.

When you do a Tax Return you can take off things such as electricity if you work from home, petrol if you use a car (my Post Office is at the end of my road so I don't put down any petrol usage), you can also allow for packaging, I'm just doing my 08/09 Tax Return, it's been a nightmare as I never updated my spreadsheet so I'm now having to go through all my receipts to put in how much I paid for the items.

I re-registered today and the guy I spoke to asked if I was interested in doing a half day course which they offer to Self Employed people, I never got offered it first time round but would like to go this time, I think they explain things like keeping records and what records you need to keep and what you are allowed to take off your profit. I've never had to pay tax as I've not earnt enough but I do my Tax Return online and then they send me a statement saying I don't need to pay tax, they just like people to declare what they have earnt, much better that way than to get caught not declaring it and having a huge fine to pay.

    Sorry for all the questions!

The mileage rates are here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/travel.htm .

Don't forget that you need to keep all your receipts for postage and packaging materials, and any other costs you incur in the course of selling your items, plus of course the invoices from the wholesaler for the things you buy. All these costs come off your selling revenue to calculate your taxable profit.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

Can i join please? One of my NY resolutions is to clear the house of clutter, by way of ebay, freecycle and the charity shop.

One question though - how long should i relist things (free 99p auctions ;) ) before deciding enough is enough, nobody wants it?!!

    Hi Sammey90

Welcome to the Challenge, it's great to have new joiners, the more the merrier!

I have things listed that I've been listing for the last few months, it's free to list if it's 99p so I keep relisting, if I had to pay to list for 99p then I wouldn't bother and would just get rid. I've sold a few things that I've had listed for a long time so it's definitely worth persevering, the more items you have listed the more likely you are to sell something, if someone is interested in one of your items then they might look at your other items and buy something else.

I've not seen this posted yet so apologies if I am repeating. Anyone thinking of listing items for sale on Play.com should do it now as the first 5 sales of January are free! They did this last year and the year before (although those were first 10 sales free). Here are the T&Cs:

There are no commission fees to pay on your first 5 sales in from 1st January 2010 to 31st January 2010, now even more of the money goes into your pocket. Cash in those unwanted presents today to buy something you really wanted!

    How it works:
    1. Your first 5 sales between 1st January 2010 and 31st January 2010 will have their seller fees refunded.
    2. If you already have items for sale through PlayTrade, you don't need to re-list them. Both new and existing listings are covered by the promotion.
    3. To qualify for the refund of fees, any sale should be dispatched to the customer within 2 days.
    4. The commission fee and the 50p closing fee will be refunded once you confirm dispatch. The refund may take up to 14 days to appear in your PlayFunds account.
    5. You will be credited with 100% of the PlayTrade sale value in your PlayFunds account.
    6. If you wish to withdraw your funds instead of spending them on site, this will be subject to a 5% transfer fee.
    7. Our normal fees will apply for all other sales and from your 6th sale onwards. Please see our fees page for more details.
    8. The offer excludes audio/talking books and tickets.

  • Evening everyone
Help please with greenmet .......... just listed 19 books and they are all showing except for one that I added postage to - I then took the postage off and it still doesn't show - any ideas ????

Also - is it better (financially) to list fiction paperbacks on greenmet rather than putting a price on them on amazon ? and do we REALLY make a profit after the p&p are taken into account ??

  • Just had a question re an item I'm selling on ebay.
The item is a knitting pattern and the question I was sent was .........
Seeing how this item is proving popular then why don't I photocopy it and sell the copies. She would then seemingly be interested !!!!!

Me thinks that she could buy the item and then sell on herself !!

Unless it is a pattern of your own (one you designed and wrote out yourself), making and selling multiple copies would be in breach of the copyright, which will be owned by whoever first published it.

So what your questioner suggests is illegal.
