Gas on constantly or on and off...?

cold water pipes?
to get ice with the boiler on clearly there is a problem, but of course the pipes feeding to taps only circulate water when the taps are in use and as such they could freeze regardless of the boiler been on or off.
Also, people need to remember to turn off the water supply to any external taps they have otherwise they could freeze and crack (this happened to a neighbour of mine).0 -
My house always seems to be 8 or 9 degrees at the lowest, regardless of how cold it is outside. Anyone know why/how? Is that normal?
I can only think electrical heat from the fridge and freezer and heated fishtank when i'm not there or overnight.
I thought most boilers had frost protection built in to prevent pipes freezing?0 -

Boilers should have frost protection to stop the pipes etc in and by the boiler from freezing.
The problem is the cold water pipes - particularly to outside taps.0 -
My outside tap is in a little stone shelter with a wood door against the house. I've filled it with bubblewrap packaging for insulation. Do you think it'll freeze still? If it has, what's then best thing to do? Turn the connector off where it joins and open the tap, so that when it thaws it just drips out?0

In the (hopefully) unlikely event of the pipe/connector being damaged it has probably already happened, but solid ice doesn't leak!!! It will become apparent when it starts to thaw.
Obviously if you can turn off the outside tap from inside it is better.0 -

From another thread, some anecdotal evidence confirming that leaving it on constantly is a bad idea:-
