Perhaps jomo and iamana's discussion would make a good topic for a new thread!

I hate it when people hijack threads and then start having a private argument. This was a light hearted rant by the OP which most of us identified with whatever our weight.
We all know that the only way to lose weight is to eat less but it is hard over the holidays. Roll on Jan 4 when I will try to lose the 7lbs I have put on (+ the other 6lbs I have been trying to lose all year).
Happy New Year0 -

I hate it when people can't control what they put in their faces and then blame the holidays :rolleyes:I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

Not going near the scales - far too shocking for me, Glowgirl.
But I have eaten far too much of the most unhealthy stuff because it was in the house - supposedly for the DDs - but eaten by me too, because it was there. It seemed unfair to refuse to have anything other than healthy stuff indoors over Christmas too, but I have slipped dramatically. Vast amounts of bread products, sweet stuff, fatty stuff, limited exercise. No one else's fault, just mine.
And I feel like - BLEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, come tomorrow, I shall be sorting things out again.
Then, the trip back to the gym to see whether their prices have changed since my last membership expired. Then medical clearance and gentle exercise.
Hopefully that should make things a bit better soon.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

Bit late to reply I guess, but never mind

Glowgirl, I'm not suggesting your weight is anyone's business but your own. If you're happy and healthy on the diet you're on then go for it! I only commented because I misunderstood the nature of the post - thought you were lookng for advice and of course I couldn't resist sticking my oar in lol. BMIs are based on national averages and often don't take build into account, so I guess the best BMI for you would be lower than the best BMI for someone of the same height but a broader build. The main thing is that you're healthy, and you're the best judge of that.
If I was going to take advice on diet and health from another source I personally would not get it from someone who is selling a book on the subject. I don't think a book entitled "Would you believe it, the NHS diet guidelines were right all along" would sell many copies! Authors of diet books have a vested interest in saying everyone else is wrong. I tend to skim dietary research journals every few months or so, just in case they come out with anything spectacularly useful (most recently was tumeric and vanilla can help prevent cancer). I haven't seen anything debunking the basic "saturated fat is bad for you, carbs are necessary in your diet etc" stuff.
There are specialists in the NHS who are experts on diet. They are called dieticians, and they do know their stuff. Oncologists are not dieticians, I am not sure why you'd expect an oncologist (or a GP for that matter) to be an expert on diet any more than you'd expect a chiropracter to be an expert on cardiology.
FYI dieticians have to study to get their qualification and to be called a dietician. Anyone could be a nutritionist. Heck, I could be a nutritionist. I may try that next time I'm short on cash.

Hi everyone, update time, thank you for all the helpful replies, I stuck to my very low carb diet, it was so hard I cant tell you, I slipped a couple of times but got there in the end and am now weighing in at 8st 8lb:DI'm going to stick with the strictness for a couple more weeks and then relax slightly I did add one extra thing which was not eating at all after 6pm until the next morning, I started this about 10 days into the diet and it really made a difference, I am going to carry this on as well, I feel much better in myself and being distracted with work etc and back to normality after the christmas laze has helped too, apologies for my self indulgence:oI feel quite silly now but at the time I really went down low so thanks again for all the help:TThank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0

Do you know that a very low carb diet is very bad for you in the long term especially. I would advise you to go and see your doctor.
Maybe not for everyone. I don't eat sugar, flour, wheat, grains or starches, I also don't eat nuts, I only eat fruit once a day at breakfast but I do eat a lot of fresh vegetables both raw and cooked every day (about 12 portions according to the NHS portion calculator)
My nurse was concerned at my choice of diet and run some tests, liver and kidney functions, cholestrol etc and they were all better than normal and she encouraged me to keep doing what I was doing. My doctor thinks I should eat more dairy foods but cheese is a huge trigger for binging so I stay away from it, but I have started to include a small amount of milk again in my diet.
This is the only way of eating that my body appreciates, without it I am bloated, I gain lots of weight, I suffer depression, headaches, I struggle to concentrate, I'm tried all the time. It's not about being super thin, I weigh 9s 10lb and I'm comfortable with that if I lose more great, if I don't that's ok and if I gain a few pounds the world won't end either!
Glowgirl glad your back on track and feeling better about yourself

Anyone can study and get qualifications but that doesn't make them a good dietician. My doctor referred me to the in-house dietician as I have bad UC/Crohns and when I have a flare up I don't eat much.
She kept telling me to eat more dairy products as I was getting older and calcium is important. I had already told her that I cant eat cheese or dairy products as that makes my symptons worse. She then told me to eat more fibre - again the wrong thing for me.
I complained about her to the surgery and they told me she was new but had very excellent qualifications. When I went back six months later she had been replaced.0
