    Something I had never really considered until a few years ago is quite how UNbalanced eating significant amounts of carbs is.

    In historical terms humans have only recently shifted from predominantly meat and plants (a low carb diet) to grains and cereals. And obesity has spiralled almost out of control since people were told to cut down on fat and eat more bread and pasta.

    On the other hand, grains and cereals are cheap to produce and store well.

    I recommend the Diet Delusion by Gary Taubes too. There's a video of one of his lectures online though it's a little dry as it's being presented in a university type setting. Here's the link anyway http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4362041487661765149#

    Thanks everyone for your comments, I will be sticking with low carb as I know it works for me, I do no carb for a while at first until I have got my head round it and then stick with low carb as a way of eating not just a diet, I got on the scales last night and I have gained a total of 10 pounds in just over 2 weeks, really not good but yesterday went well food wise so I am less negative today, it really has helped that a number of posters know where I'm coming from, thanks to all those who offered words of support:Tsome of the posts actually made me smile, quite a job the mood I was in yesterday;)

    I've never been advised to eat loads of bread and pasta, like I said...a balanced diet....

    As long as your doctor is happy with the diet then fine.

    Doctors tend to know little about diet and nutrition.

    Would you mind posting an average day's food on your fabulously balanced diet, please?

    Given that there is no science to support the guff they've been peddling since the 1950s, and those theories are what has been used to train doctors, it's fair to say that they know little.

    Personally I was diagnosed with PCOS some years ago. Doctors advised me to take drugs and to eat lots of small carby meals through the day to keep blood sugars stable. This is the advice often given to diabetics. This was the worst advice they could give. By low carbing I have not only maintained weight, but I've conquered the PCOS symptoms without the need for drugs. Diabetics I know have been able to give up insulin injections as a result of eating a diet that the human body is designed to handle rather than the sh1te diets their doctors had thought would work.

    Give the diet delusion a try and then tell me what you think a balanced diet is ;-)

    I have a cousin who recently died from breast cancer. Her oncologist "admitted" that she knew nothing about nutrition. This specialist is supposedly one of the best in the country.

    Until recently many doctors were telling their patients to eat margarine - an excellent source of trans-fats. To be fair to the medics though, they have a lot of other things to learn when they are in medical school.

    I have an old friend who is a GP (qualified 10 years ago) and she told me that they had virtually no training in nutrition beyond "don't eat saturated fats or red meat", "margarine is good for you", "the food pyramid with cereals/grains/rice as the predominant food source is healthy" etc etc etc. Whether that is true for all medical schools I don't know. Perhaps we should be asking if there's any evidence that the doctors actually do receive significant training in nutrition and if so is it based on recent data, or theories from the 1950s.

    I still believe that our bodies are not "designed" or optimised for eating grains. After all, grains have only been cultivated for the last few thousand years and human evolution doesn't happen that rapidly. Just because we've adapted and can tolerate them doesn't necessarily mean they are really good for us. We've adapted to ingesting trans fats too and we can see where that's got us.

    I really have no problem with people eating whatever they like - it's just sad to watch them having to fight to lose weight, counting calories and obsessing about fat grams.
