A drop in the standard of living today would not take us back to the 30's.

Many people could cut back yet still live comfortable lives.

Indeed. I'd go so far as to say many should cut back, & would still lead comfortable lives...
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Could be that the neutral Base rate for the economy has wratcheted down a couple of % to 3% , maybe good news for those on long term trackers, as Tommy Trinder used to say 'You lucky people'
Strange how this desperate recession that was supposed to mean mass evictions for house buyers and easy street for the bears and STR brigade, may actually achieve the opposite

”Fiscal consolidation will likely intensify over coming quarters and in a weak growth environment the likely result is that interest rates will be kept low to compensate,” said James Knightley, economist at ING.
”As a result, rather than seeing the Bank of England raise rates to between 5 and 6 per cent as in previous cycles, the eventual peak in UK rates this time round may be closer to between 3 and 4 per cent.”

mm so they put 0.1% growth instead of the 0.4% forecast.

Not very good at these conspiracies are they? if they had posted 100,000,000% we would all be voting labour.

I suppose because this figure is preliminary and will have 2 revisions. Revisions can go down aswell as up. However, I suspect that the ONS will be leant on and wouldn't dare revise this downwards.
  • We may not still be technically in a recession but at virtually 0% it is stagnation.

Nothing much for the government to crow about.
