The Art of Crochet has just been reissued. Having always wanted to have a go at crochet, I've just bought the first issue. Great value at 99p, you get two balls of yarn and a crochet hook, along with a DVD, and simple starting instructions. The DVD is easier to understand than the photo instructions, and now, two hours later, I can fairly confidently make a slip knot and a foundation chain. The foundation chain is a bit wobbly and unevenly tensioned, but I can do a really long one
I haven't quite managed a successful slip stitch without it looking like knotted string, though, so I need to practice. I seem to be having trouble with yarn separating into strands when I'm pulling it through the two loops, even though I'm using a fresh section. Can anyone offer any advice? Or am I just totally crack-handed? :rotfl:
It would be great if there where more newbies out there wanting to join in discovering the ancient art of crochet. Who's up for it?0 -
Just poking my nose in here and delighted to see someone else had picked up the Art of Crochet kit. I've always quite liked the idea of this sort of thing (my great Aunt is an incredible knitter) and I like the idea of doing this when it's horrible outside and I'm worn out from riding the 'orse.
I'm about to put the DVD on, so watch this space!!!0 -
Betony - I'm at around the same stage as you, though I think my foundation chain is a little tight, so I'm working on making them looser. I can't really get the tension / feel on the yarn in my left hand (wrapped round my fingers) right yet but hopefully that will click. I'm also having trouble with the yarn separating0

I'm still no further forward than I was the other day. I can still do the foundation chain, but still stuff up the chain stitching every time. I even tried getting round the separating yard problem by having a go with some thin cotton string, but I think the hook is too small to catch it properly.
I'm getting pretty demotivated with it now
I've got some knitting needles knocking about somewhere. I might YouTube how to cast on and use the yard to learn to knit instead...
ETA LynseyandMatthew, those are fab, well done you. You must be a quick learner to do those within two months of starting0 -
