they can roll out but if your local exchange isnt ready then it will be of no use to you at all, a lot of exchanges arent due for the upgrade for a while in certain areas, mid 2010-mid 2011.
As for the contract it depends entirely on what they decide when they release it, thats like asking is it going to rain on june 10th 2010??
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
  • i have signed uptp talktalk essentials and am due to be connected on 31st, I had the option of including a turbo boost for free which will apparently take my speed upto 13.3 MB. Maybe worth seeing if you can just add the turbo boost and if so if it is available free as it is to new customers?

Available where line speed is over 8 Meg

With our Turbo Boost you'll get up to 24Meg speeds!

Free from 1st Jan 2010 if you can get it.
At present I get 6.978 megs,so not expecting much difference.
From what I can gather it`s all down to your local exchange and their wiring.
Most of it old and crap and not fibre optic.
  • read on the talktalkmebers forums that you can change to the essentials package to get the 24meg AND stay out of contract
I will give it a go and see what they say

I logged-in to my TT account today and requested the free boost for up to 24 megs.
Clicking on a link it tests your line for what speed you`re likely to acheive.
In my case up to 13 megs.
At the mo I get on average 7megs.
Will wait to see what and when I get the extra boost.

    Well they didn`t hang about,it`s been done already,up from 7megs to 10megs.

As was posted earlier,it`s all down to the final cable from the local exchange to your house.
If it`s not fibre-optic you won`t get anywhere near 24 megs.
Up from 7megs to 10megs for free,so no complaints here. :T

Is it technically possible to shove 24Megs via POTs to your front door?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Obviously not, that`s why new fibre-optic`s required.
But if we`re relying on good old BT to get it done or this crappy government with their £5 a year charge (tax proposal) for every landline user, don`t hold your breath.

Right..so why are some companies seemingly suggesting that people can get (upto) 24 megs when it is all but impossible unless you live next door to the exchange and no one as yet has fibre optics or coax direct to their front door? Its surely misleading.

Of course it`s misleading but the phrase "up to" is what they hide behind to lure you in.
Obviously, only a tiny amount of people will actually get 24megs,until the networks are upgraded, which costs money and will take years.
