Hi
I'm fairly new to the forum so hopefully this is in the right place!
Basically i have just been medically retired from work at the grand old age of 44 and now have a lot of time on my hands.
Years ago i made a few bits of patchwork and i would like to get back into it but i have a few questions for the experts on here if anyone can help.
1. What is the difference between patchwork and quilting?
2. Can anyone recommend a good basic book for instruction and posssibly patterns ?
3. is there anywhere that you normally get your material from ?
4. Are there any other tools(apart from the obvious) that make life easier.
My niece is expecting a little boy in September and i would really like to make something for him - any ideas welcome.
Thank you very much in advance
Jules
I follow TONS of blogs! Crazymom is a good place to start. Also check out your local library.
I did a beginners course at Tikki London, to get me started.
You just need to learn how to use a rotary cutter and mat (try utube) to cut accurately
and how to keep a consistant and accurate 1/4 inch seam allowance.
I use the edge of my sewing foot, in the right hand position. If one edge is slightly bigger, follow the bigger edge with your foot. If one square is bigger, put the bigger one bottom down, they then magically sort themselves out, this works for setting in sleves too (I hope I explained that well enough)0 -

Hi! New to this thread!
I might be in the wrong place but the other thread you posted looked a bit dead!
I'm trying to think about making a net skirt for my 30th fancy dress. I want to make a tutu for a shortish wedding dress (big fat gypsy 30th!).
All the tutorials I've come across are for no sew (too ballerina) or for ruffle underskirts (beautiful but not tacky enough!). I basically want to make the sort version of this skirt:

Im making a playquilt for when the baby arrives and is doing "tummy time" but I really need advice on the quilting part please. I want to keep the quilting to a minimum and just do a grid format rather than freemotion but because there are words on it I was wondering if you guys think I should use invisible thread rather than white or coloured. I dont want to ruin it as I quite like it so I thought invisible might be the way to go. Also, would you quilt diagonally or just straight lines down and across?? Im new to quilting as you know so wanted to check what you guys thought first. Here is it. Ive basted it as you can see (bit squint but will do the job) so its ready to be quilted. Any thoughts/advice??? I need to get it finished before I go into labour so Im totally running out of time! :rotfl: xxx

I would quilt over the words too and either sew straight lines next to the seems by putting the foot against the seem and then sewing or sew zigzag lines like I did with this baby quilt
If the photo doesn't show up it's on my blog0 -
Hi Poots when is your baby due, you will be busy then!
I have at last reached the bottom of my sock pile so winding up the biggies and getting on with other stuff. So many rules and regs. you can meet yourself coming back!
I hope you put a photo of your quilt when you've finished it.0 -
Thanks everyone for all your advice. Ive ended up not quilting over the words because I started it before I read all the other replies so just went with the first ones and ones from facebook. Its looking quite good I think! Pennib, due in 3 weeks. Baby is 2/5ths engaged so Im hoping I dont go overdue! x0

Hello there.
I'm sorry I can't answer your question I've never made anything with netting (apart from a tutu for a small bunny toy) I hope someone will come along with an answer for you.0 -
Hi Spugzbunny. Found this one on y*utube if it helps

There are lots of tutorials on there for tutu's. Some are unfortunately the 'no sew' ones but you might find one you like the look of

The problem with netting is that the shorter it is the more sticky outty it goes, (more tutu). if you only do a few layers and try not to gather it too much, it will lie down straighter, I would be tempted to just get a piece of thick elastic 9 (or an elastic belt) to the correct waist size and then pin the first piece of net on with very little gathering and then build it up gradually, then baste it all on by hand before sewing by machine.0
