I love finding things I'd forgotten about, it's like getting something new for free :) I also love digging out winter/summer things at the start of the season that have been vacuum packed away for months, ah happy days :)

  • I know what you mean about having the children around when you are trying to declutter. Mine (18 and 15 now) are actually quite good at decluttering on their own now - so seeing me do it obviously sunk in! Depending on the personalities of your children, you could ask them to sort out some old toys to make space for new things they get for Christmas. With my boys the idea of taking things to a charity shop where other children could buy them (we used to buy toys and puzzles from charity shops) was quite appealing ....

Don't forget to pace yourself - you don't want to burn out just before Christmas!
Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.

Hello everyone, I usually join this thread in the school holidays but a bad back and impending op have put a temporary stop to any de-cluttering. Will hopefully rejoin in a few weeks. New Year, New Start! I have enjoyed reading about all your accomplishments well done everyone.

  • My challenge this weekend is to clear the master bedroom - even if some of the stuff moves into the spare room. I will try and sort as much as possible as I go.

Keep up the good work everyone.
Done! Woo-hoo! :j And although some stuff is now in the spare room, I did a load of sorting out. Another charity bag now started for the local hospice shop.

Next challenge is to sort the clothes mountain into colour coded piles  to see if carpet does exist on the landing...

    Wish me luck :A

  • Tackling the drawers/suitcase of tops this morning.

Trying to convince myself I don't need 9 old tshirts/tops for the gym... especially since my membership ran out 3 months ago! :o

Well, didn't get much done at the weekend. Just had a binge in the hall. Threw all the shoes and boots on the stairs and reckon we must have enough for a family of 20! Boys have sorted theirs out, will do mine later. Hope DH wont get too upset as popped all his in two charity bags for him to sort through. Just know he's going to want at least 6 pairs of boots left in the hall.

Dustmen haven't been this week due to the snow so I think our bins going to be a bit top full after Christmas.

Hoovered the stairs (before I threw all the shoes on them, doh!) and found a little carpet in our room and DD's room. Her room is next for a binge as its full of boxes of baby clothes, cot mattress, bedding etc. etc.

Friend popped round to drop a card off today. Fortunately she knows how untidy we were but still a little embarassing that it looked like a bomb had gone off. I keep blaming DD (2) but really its not just her.

Must get motivated into Christmas wrapping. Not entirely sure what I have bought but now have enough for the kids. That will free up some wardrobe space and I can have a sort out in the New Year.

Happy Decluttering, folks and if I dont get the chance to revisit this thread, Happy Christmas :xmassign: - Fill yer bins! :rotfl:

Well I'm quite pleased, there was a huge pile of old toys at the back of my living room (my husband had cleared them out of DS1's bedroom and decided they looked good downstairs :D )

Well our neighbours daughter bought loads of the stuff with her birthday money so DS1 is happy with the money, she is happy with the stuff, I'm happy without the stuff :T(and her mum is unhappy !)

Apart from that I got 4 massive bin bags of clothes and toys off to the charity shop and have almost cleared our tiny landing - heaven help us if we ever had to escape a fire, getting past all that stuff.

My bedroom looks like an exploded market stall at the mo - covered in wrapping paper (thanks DH) and shirts of his that I ironed yesterday still hanging outside the wardrobe.
When I came home today the bedroom light was on and the blinds open and all you could see from the street was junk. Quick rush inside and upstairs shouting "shut the curtains"! - See I feel worse than usual as there have been a few parties in different neighbours houses lately and they are all immaculate!:o
Just call me Nodwah the thread killer
  • Well my OH and i have decided 2011 is the year we declutter the house as we have way too much in it.

I've not really done a huge declutter before and am not sure where to start.

The aim is to have the house done by May 2011 so that when we come back from our holiday in Las Vegas the house is clear and we can then get the !!!!! cats we have been wanting for a long time :T.

At the moment with all the clutter if the cats decided to hide we would probably never find them again!

Any tips and hints would be fantastic.

Do we go room by room? Or would it be better to do a little bit each day so it doesn't seem like such a mountain?
