but the point is, they would be served cold!!!
Perhaps we should define COLD (In Kelvin perhaps)...
If a potato salad (although see below) using fresh boiled new potatos has the mayo (dressing) added whilst the pots are still warm is it, by definition, a salad OR new pots with a mayo dressing untill it reaches a certain temp. If said potato with mayo (and seasoning of black pepper and sea salt if desired) is then placed in a freezer at what point will it go from salad to, say, potatosicle?
Conversly...
If a green leaf salad with an olive oil and raspberry DRESSING is served at a bar-b-q when will it cease being a salad if left in the full sun?annie-c wrote:
If the egg is 'dressed' then it is egg mayonnaise, most likely, which goes nicely with salad, but which is not in itself a salad dish....
Except that doesn't work because potato salad isn't raw....
Are we then perhaps we misrepresenting potato salad and, by that maxim, should ACTUALLY be calling it potato mayonnaise?0 -
If you think a salad should be various ingredients, don't order salads in Greece. A Greek salad has several ingredients but if you order a "tomato salad" that's what you get - a plate of sliced tomatoes.fgaughan wrote:Tomatoes is not a veg its a fruit

I saw a splendid quote recently in the Times:
Intelligence is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.0 -

I really think that 'dressing' is a red herring! If salads had, by definition, to include dressing, then why would 'salad dressing' be so called? The very name 'salad dressing' implies that the dressing is something that goes with the salad, but is separate from it.
Maybe we should also look up 'dressing' at dictionary.com....0 -

err...
Don't eat salad
Does that make it any easier?0 -
To me salad is fruit or vegetables that can be eaten raw, does not have to be cooked.
Not too sure about being at least two items 'cos that would then be a mixed salad!0 -

Am laughing again at this thread now.
I still think salad has to be more than one item, otherwise it is simply 'cucumber' or' tomato' or 'potato mayonnaise' or whatever its name is.
Maybe 'Mixed Salad' refers to it all being tossed together in a bowl, rather than laid out nicely in seperate containers.....?0 -
