I find that Asda's yeast is the cheapest at 50p for 6 sachets (I think)
In the larger Tesco stores (and online) you can by this:

    Yeast

Much better value than those piddly little sachets. At 99p for 125 g it's about a third of the cost if my maths is right?

I've had pretty good success with 'basics' flour. You just have to check the Gluten content on the label. With 12% gluten content there isn't a lot of difference between 'basic flour' and bread flour IMHO. I've found gluten content varies - just using the last bulk purchase from Sainsburys basic at 12%.
It sure keeps the cost of baking a loaf down!

Any idea what makes a flour 'basic' ie what is the difference with the product to a normal own brand flour??

I use the Doves Farm large packet too, lasts for ages and much cheaper than the little sachets and I've always had great results.
    Waitrose also stock this.

You can also use a 50:50 mix of bread flour to Value type plain flour. If you do this in a breadmaker, use the maximum recommended amount of yeast and use the longer wholemeal cycle. Gives a nice soft loaf I find.

Or 70% bread flour to 30% standard non-bread wholemeal flour.

Any difference in taste with 100% value?
    Buy for value not cost.

Went to Lidl last week for the cheap bread flour and it was reduced to 61p - the same price as Tescos, bought a couple of packets.

Bought bread flour at Lidl yesterday still 61p for 1.5kg bag
  • We use Ocado's Essential breadmaking flour - white is 64p, brown and wholemeal are 98p each for a 1.5 kg bag.
Dove's Farm Quick Yeast is 99p for a 125 gm pack.
A mix of half white and half brown gives the best result in our latest breadmaker, a Kenwood BM250 that we bought in Currys for £19.95 approx 3 months ago. (Previously we had a Breville fan assisted breadmaker that gave us 9 years good service.)
