You can also use a 50:50 mix of bread flour to Value type plain flour. If you do this in a breadmaker, use the maximum recommended amount of yeast and use the longer wholemeal cycle. Gives a nice soft loaf I find.

Or 70% bread flour to 30% standard non-bread wholemeal flour.

Sainsburys instant yeast is 79p for 8 sachets, one is 7g - enough for about 700g flour
  • I've had pretty good success with 'basics' flour. You just have to check the Gluten content on the label. With 12% gluten content there isn't a lot of difference between 'basic flour' and bread flour IMHO. I've found gluten content varies - just using the last bulk purchase from Sainsburys basic at 12%.
It sure keeps the cost of baking a loaf down!

I find that Asda's yeast is the cheapest at 50p for 6 sachets (I think)

It sure is :) It comes in a little brown box - and they're easy to open too, unlike both tesco and sainsburys versions which are a few more pennies too.

Something that works out a fair bit cheaper than even the above is the little yellow tub of Allinsons yeast, it's 49p in Asda (50p in Tesco and 52p in Sainsburys) for 125g. You do have to measure out the amount you want rather than the little sachets but you do get 125g for the same price as the 42g in total sachets.

that's the yeast I use and I'm getting nice bread !
  • Is anyone using this successfully in a breadmaker? It says hand baking on the tub so I have avoided it.

I use it in the breadmaker - it has been quite adequate.
