  • are you both in the u.k?

if you are then you be better off just both being on a network which has free calls to the same network/caller group i.e giffgaff or vodafone family.

skype over wifi is generally very good but less so over the mobile network.

I use skype in this very way , works ok , not great maybe but useable yes both with pc to mobile and mobile to mobile .
  • Remember that Skype on the handset is not the same as Skype on a pc or mobile broadband. The call travels over the Three network in the same way as other voice calls and does not reach the internet until it leaves their network. If you are calling someone else on the Three network you can expect a good quality call.

I haven't noticed any major difference in call quality on mobile Skype to mobile Skype compared to a regular call.
  • Another thing to remember is with a £10 top up Three include unlimited Three-to-Three calls, so you can call over the standard mobile network as well as through the Skype application. The new SIM only network, giffgaff, which is powered by O2 also includes unlimited texts and calls to other members, but you'll need to buy a SIM free phone or get a normal one unlocked.
    Hope that helps,

    Mark

Full Disclosure If this is a mobile phone related post, I'd like to disclose that I currently work for Three retail but any posts I make are my own, and not endorsed by the company in any way. I use this forum in a private capacity.

Can you explain why more cost means better off?

The simplest option is to get a mobile on the 3 network, such as the 3 Skypephone for £30 to £40. You might even get 2.

On 3 calls to and from Skype users are always free, even if you don't top up. The call is actually made as ordinary GSM via a gateway number hidden from the customer, and data use needed is only nominal, for presence info and so on, so it should work fine even where 3 has no 3g coverage and roams on to its 2g agreement with Orange.

There are arrangements possible on other networks, but on these you call an access number which is chargeable for payg or on contracts uses your inclusive minutes

Or there are some client programs you can install on more complicated phones and use your Skype account, either via wi-fi or even 3g data ...

Well, buying the phone in the High Street or from 3, they'd no doubt want to sell you some credit as well, but otherwise the Skype use is free and you would not need to top up again unless for other calls.
