This is a good deal on a Samsung machine here
If you use code REVIEW5 it will give you 5% off making it around £350 and can be used for collect in store purchase as well. Or if you want it delivered go thru Quidco as well
Not going to be a gaming machine at this price but if you want it for general browsing, word processing or to watch films it is a good deal. Comes with Windows 7 preinstalled
According to people on HUKD it is a T4300 processor as well not a T4200 as advertised
Damn that is a good deal I wonder if i can cancel my order with john lewis?:hello:"Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing it doesn't go in a fruit salad0 -

Hi everyone.
Can I please ask you, if money wasn't an issue, and you wanted to get the best deal you could, and the best everyday laptop..... would you choose a Dell, Sony, Mac, or one of the ones you've detailed above. ie. Is it better to get a cheapie and then change it in 3 or 4 years, or should you spend £800 on a laptop now and be done with it?
I've got a 12 year old PC which is bulging with information, and it's time to get rid of the huge computer desk & stuff and make do with a smaller, portable machine; but I'm out of my depth deciding.
Many thanks.0 -
Here are two I came across;
£449 - Acer Aspire 16" with Core2Duo at 2GHz, 4Gb RAM, 250Gb Hard Drive, separate GT9600 graphics card with 1Gb and DVD writer and Windows Vista Premium (incl upgrade to Windows 7 before 30 Jan here http://www.acer.com/windows7upgrade/index.html)
at Argos http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001801&langId=-1&searchTerms=ACER+6930&Submit=GO+%3E
or a bit cheaper
£350 (with REVIEW5 code) - Samsung 15.6" with Dual Core Pentium at 2GHz, 3Gb RAM, 500Gb Hard Drive and Windows 7 Premium
at Comet http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/605735/SAMSUNG-NP-R519-JA05UK?cm_sp=FeatureEnd-_-Laptops-_-position
Note: c0de can be used on website and then collected in store

Although laptops can last for much longer, I think you will find that you would want to swap/upgrade them every 2 to 4 years. How often will depend on the spec of the one you bought in the first place.
For home use, as long as it is reliable, no real need to spend more for brand names, at the end of the day, the components are the same (assuming you compare the specs). Get the best spec for your budget irrespective of brand.
For business use, brand is everything as it reflects build quality. Business use laptops get a lot more abuse and therefore you want a laptop that can withstand that kind of daily use. For business I would recommend Dell, HP or Lenovo.
With respect to Macs, I prefer them to PCs, apps are better integrated, easier to use and everything works together nicely. They also tend to have a longer lifespan in terms of performance but you do need a PC in the house in addition to a Mac. I have an iMac but I find that there are certain apps that are only available on a PC eg the updating software for my Sat Nav.
If you don't use it for gaming, I would personally recommend a lower priced laptop in the £350 to £450 range. You should get a very good spec and it should easily last you the next 3 years.
Hope this helps.
