hoax caller leaving their number

Ive just been woken at 1am and left a strange message on my answering machine, saying it was from the police...i rang the number that they left for me to contact them which was a mobile number that didnt exsist...i rang 1471 and the number begins with 056017 so rang it back

the bloke was definitely the same voice as the so called police man who left the answering machine message, he completely denied he had even called me...i have reported this to the police but they werent interested unless he keeps doing it

whats really worried me though is he mentioned my local police station so he knows where i live but i dont recognise his voice...its not someone messing about for a joke..im on my own with my disabled son who is very often ill at night so those who know me wouldnt think a call like this was funny

is there anyway i can find out who this is, ive googled the number but nothing i rang BT but they cant do anything til after the bank holiday, i know this isnt the biggest problem ever buts its unnerved me. thanks in advance for any advice

It doesn't help you with your problem, but I think the no is a voip phone no, so I would think it would be very hard to trace it.
Be thankful for what you have because it could all be taken away tomorrow.;)

I can confirm that numbers that start are 0560 voip numbers.

If it happens again contact one of the specialist advisors at the Malicious Calls Bureau on 0800 661 441 (24hrs, 7 days a week)

They have lots of ways and means of tracking persistent callers. Its possible it might even be a 0560 number allocated by BT anyway.

...anyone wanting not to be found can bypass any trace very easily. The police and fire service know this as does the government.

The OP has been VERY stupid replying to that call and needs to act more responsible. I'll just point out this sort of thing used to be done by someone you know (or knew) but nowadays it's so easy to abuse telecoms it could be anyone.

If someone (especially the police) has to contact you they will chap your door.

They can trace the renter of the 0560 number ,and their is no need to be rude to other posters, seeking help.

  • it is possible to set up your phone by the operator to put a bar on any incoming calls with that number is witheld.

Im wondering if maybe it is possible to have voip numbers blocked too.

    Worth calling your phone provider.

I can't see that it is either stupid or irresponsible. It may be unwise and Jemma, if you wanted to ad value to this discussion you could explain why it is unwise. But without that, I don't think your post is good enough.

Jemma im not in the least bit offended that you sit behind your computer to try to insult me, but the fact is when i had my car stole a few years back i was contacted by the police in the early hours to say they had found it , do you think the police dont use phones?? and they contact everyone personally at their door!

No notbritishgas it was a mobile that began with 079,and it didnt exsist.
Thanks for the advice everyone, i shall just unplug the phone tonight, with hindsight its just some cowardly idiot somewhere, lastnight i had only just got my son and myself to sleep when it happened and it bothered me, if it persist shall contact malicious calls that ypaymore gave me.Thanks again.
