hoax caller leaving their number

I think it's most likely someone messing about. As has already been mentioned, 056 numbers are VoIP numbers. The BT Broadband service offers an extra phone number and phone line the works over the broadband connection (VoIP) and I believe that numbers issued for these can be of the 056 variety.
If it starts 056170-6 or 056178-9 then it's allocated to BT, and therefore probably provided by BT. It could be someone with a BT Broadband connection ringing numbers at random.
With a geographical number it's easy to know the location. Even down to the local area within the town or city because the first few digits of most residential numbers relate to a particular district or districts.0 -

Easy to hide that thanks to diversion services. 999 services have problems with this and the caller cannot be traced.
I don't know why people get on their high horses so quick as the OP has been stupid. I'm not not going to say that if it insults someone. If insults weren't allowed we'd still be living in caves. My opnions are that -mine. Have your own and wrap the OP up in cotton wool if you like.
Turn your phone off at night and get an answering machine. Unlike caves our houses and flats have doors which can be chapped if need be.
Do you talk to everyone in the street and confirm who you are when you walk down to the shops? No. Apply that to your phone and email.0 -

So if its to much of an effort to follow the forum etiquette, why post here in the first place. 0 -

There's an etiquette for people on death row too. I follow my own and think I post fair, reasonable and honest replies.
I'm sorry if the OP and others are upset but they are far too sensitive. People come here for help, to help and learn. I see those things as being the same.
Some people here feel obliged to reply to posts/opnions they don't like and not actually add to the conversation topic. Just move on.0 -

I'm not going to get into what can and can't be done to trace calls on an open forum.
However, you're missing DonnyDave's point. The OP was worried that the caller knew where they lived. DonnyDave simply highlighted that it's possible to get a reasonable approximation from the OP's geographic number, and the hoax caller had probably/possibly just cited a particular police station based upon that.
This has got nothing to do with the simplicity or otherwise of spoofing geographic CLIs, because DonnyDave was referring to getting approximate location from the OP's number : I think we can be pretty clear from the rest of this thread that the OP is not into spoofing their own telephone number.I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -
[QUOTE=Jemma-T;28174085The_OP_has_been_VERY stupid replying to that call and needs to act more responsible. I'll just point out this sort of thing used to be done by someone you know (or knew) but nowadays it's so easy to abuse telecoms it could be anyone.
.[/QUOTE]
please explain
ophasnt acted stupid and unresponsible trying to find out who the caller was.
the op posted for help and advice and that comment was neither

OP, you can call your phone provider and tell them (did you say it was BT?). You can pay a small amount and you have a service where you can block certain numbers calling into your line. I had to do this. The caller did not block their number one day and I called BT and said I knew how it was but they could not help due to the Data Protection Act anyway. Useless. Pay the fee and block the number, if they find another number to call you on block that too, they will soon get bored and move onto someone else.
Jemma-T I am sure the OP has been very 'stupid' as far as you can see but anyone was called by the police at night would call back. Yep, I would too. Besides, the caller already had the OP's number to call her in the first place.... or did you miss that bit.
OP, it does sound like the person calling did not expect the number to be traced on 1471 hence denying they made the call otherwise they would have admitted it and goaded you with more crap, not denied it was them. It was probably someone drunk with nothing better to do or a disgruntled teenager who did not get the Wii they wanted for Xmas - more likely one who got a new laptop for Xmas and who is now messing around with it and did not realise that their Voip number could be traced on 1471. It is probably someone from your area that knows the local area and you have probably spooked them and they won't do it again though. If it was a definate malicious call they would have witheld the number for sure as they would have known to be more careful. Get the call blocker set up anyway to give you peace of mind for the future and you can add the numbers to it if he calls again.0 -
This thread is going way off track now.
I hope that the OP has not had any more calls from this person. Calling him back may have made him think again about placing 'prank' calls.0 -
OP, the area around here starts with a certain digit, there are around 150 houses locally so it certainly would not be hard for me to put the code and first 3 digits of the number to know exactly what area I was calling. It was the same in the other village that I lived.0

Thankyou for the advice everyone, not had anymore calls either
Jemma of course you are entitled to think whatever you like, but you are still wrong in the fact that the police dont just contact you by knocking on your door, and i think its quite reasonable if your were to be contacted on your home number (which is ex directory) to be left a message with the name, rank and station of the police officer and a contact number to get in touch with, i think a lot of people would ring it back...so i dont understand (or care)why you think im "very stupid" or why you are getting so irate
thats unless your my Hoax caller!!!!
no one is wrapping me up in cotton wool, i came on here when i felt a bit vunerable in the middle of the night and got some good advice and information, Thankyou to all of you who posted
