New HD Ready TV/Digital help please.

Options
Hi folks.

Am confused on something.

Have anyone gone through the changeover yet with digital?

The reason why I ask is that my disabled son had a lovely 19inch Digital HD ready TV for xmas from his grandparents, the make is Murphy LCD, Model: TV19UK10D. The freeview is built in.

I have tried checking on google but can't find anything, yet I could check out Murphy website, because even the manual for this does not give much info on trouble shooting.

For his new TV we purchased a Digi-top Indoor aerial, we also have sky with the basic package and my older son already has a TV with everything built in including freeview.

Now the problem is here is that we still can't get any signal at all with my diabled son's new TV.
On the screen is keeps coming up as "no signal".

I am absolutely baffled on this.

Surely the normal channels should come up, even if Freeview does not.
The first thing that does actually come up on screen is "Freeview", then the message Signal at 0%.

Another thought is that, maybe we have to wait for the changeover, here its in March 2010.
But the other channels should work though I think./
I could be wrong and am going to buy a signal booster - in the sales.

Meanwhile though I have also emailed the technical department of Digital and see what they come back with as well.

Will also check on the manufacturers website.

If anyone does know anything about this, will be glad of your feedback, thank you.

Indoor aerial is unlikeky to be any good, you probably need a new aerial, cant understand why SKY is not working, are you sure youve selected the correct (Usually AV) input on the telly? Did this replace another telly? was the aerial ok for that?

Some indoor aerials will work but many will not give a good enough signal for digital reception.

Is Sky connected to your son's TV or is it your own main TV you are referring to?

How does your older son get reception?

At the moment the TV is on the digital tuner and it is not getting enough signal from the indoor aerial. You therefore need to try a better indoor aerial or investigate getting an outdoor aerial.

As to the normal, i.e. terrestial channels, you will have to switch to the analogue tuner to get these. There are several ways of doing this which are dependent on the particular TV. Some have a button on the remote which says TV/DTV - pressing this button toggles between the digital and analogue tuners. Some have an Input selector button which goes between all the inputs and you would want to select ATV (Analogue TV).

Digital channels are available in all areas at the moment - this is not your problem.

    It's basically an aerial problem.

Did your son already have reception with another TV or is this the first one?

    Hi thanks for this.

We still use our own TV and not had a problem with SKY.
    Ours is fine.

My disabled son had the older style tv, but had a new one for xmas which includes Freeview.

We also tried it by bringing it downstairs with the main outside aerial but still nothing.

The older TV my son had - had an attached aerial, and that was okay.

My oldest son's is fine as well, and uses an indoor aerial for his.

    Thank you.

    Hi thanks for your response.
We tried my son's tv on a new indoor digitop aerial, that should be adaptable with freeview, and also brought his tv downstairs to try on the main aerial from outside.

Is Sky connected to your son's TV or is it your own main TV you are referring to?
No, but his older tv worked, but had a built on aerial, where this new one did not have one, which is why I purchased a new indoor digitop aerial.

An indoor aerial and not a problem.

We have already tried this but with no success.

Thank you, and yes he did have reception with the older style TV in the same bedroom.

    Much appreciated again thank you.

    Ours is fine.

Sky really has no bearing on this at all as the signal for Sky comes from your dish
We also tried it by bringing it downstairs with the main outside aerial but still nothing.

When you connected it to the main outdoor aerial did you run the installation set up to tune in the channels?

It is possible to have indoor reception in one room and not in another. My aunt has good indoor reception in her kitchen but not in her bedroom which is a short distnace away.

Right okay, can rule this one out then lol, thanks.

It did not give that chance, we put the TV on and the screen flashed up straight away where "Freeview" come up, then the top right hand corner it stated no signal 0%.
I will ask my hubby again, but think he tried pressing on other buttons on the control as well, but will double check with him.

Yes I thought that as well, but his older TV worked okay in his bedroom, could it be a difference now though because its an updated tv perhaps?

Sorry for the all the questions, but I appreciate your feedback, you have been very helpful, thank you.

Digital TV works on a wider bandwidth and can need a stronger signal. Some of the tuners in some televisions are weaker than others as well.

I assume you get a good picture from the terrestial channels if your Sky box is off? Does this TV have Freeview or not?

Yes, I think I remember before we had Sky over 2 years ago it was very poor, it was only when we had sky there was an improvement.

I don't have freeview myself but my oldest have done for a few years and had no probs by just using an indoor aerial, so we thought my disabled son's would not be a problem either, but like you said maybe it depends where the best reception is, and yet we did bring down his new tv to try in the main room where our main tv is.

    Cheers.

That may account for your difficulties then. All of your Sky programmes are digital and come via the dish.

If you switch off Sky and view channels 1-5 just on your TV do you get a picture?
  • I have this aerial for the kitchen and one for a bedroom tv which has a integral booster although I see its gone up in price recently.

When I changed the kitchen TV recently to one including freeview I had to hold the aerial up to get enough of a signal to tune in the channels but once it tuned I could place it down and it kept the channels tuned in okay.

Have a read of this thread though for retuning since the updates as it may give some help.
