Probably will be very expensive, does it have to have an LED backlight? Or will an ordinary LCD tv be ok?

Well they're not really going to be all that different as they're both LCD TVs. Just one uses less power and can be thinner.

  • Tesco had a Samsung one on offer before xmas that was about £900 - think it was a 42"
  • i think lcd & led picture quality is chalk n cheese.i think you have to watch a movie on led to fully appreciate the quality.the lg 9500 (led) 47" can get for £1099, also uses less energy, has a usb port & bluetooth, from what i have seen a lcd47" are seling for £800+ anyway so for an extra £300 i think just aswell gofor the led, obviously they will come down in price in time, but how long

Only if you're not comparing like for like. It's exactly the same technology, they're both LCD display screens. The only difference is in the backlight which may be brighter and/or more diffused. The picture itself is being displayed on an LCD screen in both cases.

Well it would be a rubbish backlight if it didn't work. ;) I think what you're seeing is that many LED backlit TVs are obviously also the ones with the most current generation LCD screens and so of course are going to be better but not necessarily because of the LED light itself (which is literally nothing more than a big white light). The LED backlight isn't about picture quality (except for contrast) it's about power efficiency and getting the physical dimensions down. The next truly revolutionary TV screen technology is OLED which is the only genuine LED based TV.

Looks good to me and in fact I'm on the verge of buying an LG LCD TV myself very soon (only a 32"). LG seem to be quite well renowned in LCD terms. And Dixons seem to be among the cheaper suppliers for the one I was looking at as well.
