I would trust my own experience more than AV Comparatives. And Computer Shopper did a proper test with real viruses and malware.
Do you even know the site AV COMPARITIVES?
    http://www.av-comparatives.org/

They do the most comprehensive testing ive yet seen

And you never actually said what security essentials found that Avira didnt?

Because I cant remember what it was, but I am not making it up. Also note that in Computer Shopper's test Avira missed something too. it also wasnt the best at dealing with everything it did detect.

My girlfriend's laptop got a similar virus, it started opening random tabs and occasionally a pretend virus scanner appeared, Avira didnt get it, MSE did.

just my experience of course but i think it's valid to share it here. I wouldnt go back to Avira (had been using it for over 2 years).

Well if you NOTE the last test AV COMPARE did, MSE did quite poor compared to Avira
    ~
Avira scoring 74% against PRO ACTIVE threats
MSE scoring just 56% (Quite a drop I think anyone would agree)

Thats said, they compared the PREMIUM version and not the free one (The premium version of Aviras firewall is very poor so I could never recommend that)

What the free version isnt too hot at is malware which I use MALWAREBYTES for anyways (In fact NONE of the av packages seem to do well against malware)

be prepared as you might spend a while removing infections that mcafee has missed.

McAfee has excellent detection rates, so that seems unlikely.

    Do you have a link?

I didn't think they had tested Microsoft Security Essentials yet, just Microsoft Live OneCare.

OP, if you have Barclays internet banking, then you can get Kaspersky free on a 3 PC licence.
Or you could buy McAfee new on a 3 user licence for £53...they always rip you off if you just buy a renewal.
