Double Xmas present - no reciept. Returns/refund at HMV? Help please.

I bought the girlfriend an Xmas present in November, possibly even October at a push. I'm sure i kept the receipt, but it can't be found.

She told me she wanted this & deliberately didn't tell her parents she wanted it, to avoid duplicates. Well guess what .... yes her parents bought her it too, so now i'm left with an item i do not want or need.

As i say, i can't find my receipt. Would it be possible to take a printed bank statement to HMV which will give the date, the price and the fact that transaction (although doesn't state WHAT was bought) was from an HMV store - would this be accepted as proof of purchase & allow me to get a refund?

Thing is, i don't want a full refund. There's another item for £5 less which i would've bought in its place if i could find the receipt.

Just need to know where i stand as far as a refund goes.

  • They don't legally have to give you a refund at all (apart from if they tell you they will at point of purchase) and normally it's within 7/14/28 days type period - I think you stand zero chance 2+ months down the line.

When did the parents buy the item and do they have the receipt?

If it's a CD, DVD or a game I don't think you have much chance because it's too easy to copy them then return them. if it's a book, you might be lucky, but they don't HAVE to give you anything unless there's a specific "if you dont like it..." policy.

if its sealed I don't think you'll have a problem at all getting a refund after christmas as they will be expecting lots of returned gifts

Nope, her parents don't have their reciept. That was my first avenue.

It's a DVD box set, but it's still in its cellophane wrapping & therefore clearly unopened/unused.

This just gets better for me.

I always pay for things like this on occasions like this via debit card. The one and only time i pay by cash, is the one and only time i can't find the receipt

    Fantastic.

Does it still have the HMV stickers on it? If so, they will know it came from them and are more likely to accept an exchange.

Turns out that when it was wrapped, the sticker was left on.

Doesn't say HMV on the sticker, but does list the original price, the sale price & has the barcode.

Tiz my only hope. What do you reckon?

Plus, i hope the fact i want to exchange it there & then for a different box set will help my case for a 'returns acceptance'
  • What's the box set - is it something popular that could be sold on ebay for example?

Don't forget as well that even if HMV do allow a return (and their returns policy is quite limited) you will only get back what the current price is and popular box sets are often reduced a great deal after Christmas.

It was a Poirot box set. They're not selling on eBay (no surprise there as i don't like the show lol)

Anyway i headed in today and long story short is they weren't going to give me anything until they saw that sticker on it with the barcode & price. They talked of vouchers until i said i wanted to exchange it there & then for an item of same value.

So i walked out with the complete X Files box set & fresh receipt.

Get home, have a weird funny but not good, feeling.

Go and check the girlfriends DVD collection as i know she WANTED the X Files box set a while ago and can't 100% remember if she bought it, but have a weird feeling that i remember her watching episode after episode earlier in the year.

Guess what's staring back at me when i see the collection.

So now i've got to take THIS one back as well. Luckily i've got a receipt, so it's going to be imaginitive original vouchers instead.

    Great :(
