I was wondering and I am putting this out to you all, has anyone ever made a handstitched quilt? I mean truly by hand? I want to know if it is as difficult as it looks and also how long it took you to do?

Oh and I got a new job! wohoo just two days a week, but as I have been unemployed since October it was nice to go for the interview and be offered it there and then! I am looking forward to being in work but still having time to do crafting etc. I am seriously thinking of converting part of the kitchen with shelves and things so I can be more organised.

I made a patchwork cot quilt by hand - admittedly around thirteen years ago - for no1 grandson. It wasn't difficult but it was quite time consuming. If you want to make a patchwork quilt top some blocks are much easier than others and you can always alternate pieced blocks with plain, which will reduce the amount of sewing.

As for the quilting - securing the layers together - it's basically a running stitch so not difficult at all and, if you want, you can use a decorative yarn such as embroidery thread and longer stitches, which looks good on plain blocks and is much quicker. Another option is to tie the layers together, which is quickest of all! If you want any more info pm me.

Have been to a carboot today and picked up a nice stripy quilt that my daughter has took some shreds off and is, as we speak, trying to learn how to do a rag rug for her Rotary Award as part of her skills. Have found a few bargains at carboots, managed to get a lovely set of cupcake candles boxed from laura ashley for 50p!! I mean that must have been about 10 pounds when she bought it. I also got a lovely purse from accessorize for 50p too, thinking about what to make at the moment. I have a commission for a wedding card with very specific instructions from my sister so that will take a couple of days to get right.

Firstly congratulations on the job. At least part time will leave you time for crafting.

I went to a car boot too - unfortunately there wasn't a lot there as it was quite water logged - I did get a quilt though for £2 so I plan on cutting it to bits to make a new patchwork quilt. I think there are some real bargains at carboots :j

beachhut - thanks but as its got a slatted open top I think whatevers inside has to be visible and look nice -thats what made me think of candle really -plus they fit.

Mary-op Plus all the love would fall out through the slats! :doh:Doh! Good point... maybe stick with candles!

Liesa - congrats on the job :T:T:T I'm just returning to work after being off sick for 6 months and now have very little time for crafting which is quite inconvenient! At least with 2 days you can still fit in sewing :j

I didn't get to any boot sales last year *sigh* Must remedy that this year.

I made this brooch over the end of last weekend - I made it more difficult than it should have been (VERY easy) but quite chuffed. Am going to make more as pressies.

    Need help!!

I bought a blue fleecy pram blanket last night, now I'm stuck for ideas what to do with it! I quite fancied making a blue and white crochet blanket (when I learn to crochet) and backing it with the fleece. Would this work or is it a no go?
