I got a sewing machine!! I think it needs a service though as the bobbin thread isn't a good tension (it seems to be occasionally loose) :j

Has anyone else had to have theirs serviced and what is a good price?

Congrats on the sewing machine Lisa, hope you have many happy sewing days ahead!

I had a machine serviced last April, the man came out to my house and it cost me £35. I am in the South East though, and he had to travel about 15 miles each way. Might be cheaper where you live (not the same man though!!!).

So today i thought that I could put the book in some baking hampers for Christmas! I'll start to look out for cheap cake tins, aprons (could even possibly try making them!), tea towels, wooden spoons, whisk etc! Not sure yet what to use for containers? Large seive perhaps? Basin for washing up :rotfl:Any ideas?

I make these up quite alot for kids birthdays, depending on who they are going to, how close friends they are, and how old they are.

I tend to get the bowl, spoons, cutters, trays rolling pin from wilkcos, then I buy packet mixes to do with these, usually a cookie mix, cake mix and amybe a scone mix.
I have also started to make aprons too.
    They are well recieved.

You can tighten the tension on your bobbin! There is a little screw on the holder that the bobbin fits into, just tighten it a little if the cotton runs through it too freely. Also check your main tension, normally a wheel numbered 1 -10, should be on about 5, however you can adjust to tighten or loosen the bobbin or spool thread (depending which needs it).

For those of you who are making baking hampers for kids, I did a similar thing instead of party bags for my daughter's baking party. I picked up packs of 4 tea towels from Primark for £2.50, sewed down a triangle of material at the top of each, and then sewed on tape at the neck and waist to make aprons. I completed themby cutiing out the girls' initials from felt anf personalising each. They loved them, and there really wasn't much sewing involved (as I was doing it by hand)

thanks all for your enthusiasm for my new sewing machine hehehe.. Hubby was a bit confused as to why I was SOOO excited lol.

As I mentioned, I fixed my problem, someone had put the needle in backwards and once it was turned around (as per the instructions) it now is tensioned properly and zinging along lovely.

I do love your blog Laura, I have had a good look and I am bookmarking like mad lol
