Dude's Saturday tip this week - "Which Mis-price?"

#1 - The Gotcha - This is the least contentious mis-price - you have the Bay City Rollers Greatest Hits with a £1.98 sticker on and you are charged £19.99 - easy pickings - even the nastiest Customer Service staff will find it difficult to argue against this one – although your taste in music is $^*&”)$*.

#2 - Quality Meat - This covers mis-priced per kg SELs - usually meat - often cheeses and so on - your kangaroo joint has a SEL of £9 a kg - on the pack it is £10 a kg - you may have to give the CS staff a lesson in mental arithmetic dyslexia - and point to "the shelf" bit in the Price Promise - but you will get some joy.

#3 - The Time Traveller - Out-of-date crispy duck is no good for you - but out-of-date SELs are always handy - look for goods with a yellow SEL - check the expiry date - if it was last night/week/year then you could be in - check the price and you may be in - some caution - sometimes goods have not changed in price – but particularly good spots for mobiles & cameras.

#4 - The Special Offer - this covers extra advertising away from any stickers or SELs - "all XBOX games under £30" and the like - if you find one for £30.99 you have a mis-price - also check the repeating TV adverts in Extra stores - you may see Tomb Raider 7 - Laura's Melons at a lesser price – but you do have a mis-price - but you will undoubtedly face an uphill struggle with CS as you argue your case - worth a punt!

#5 - We Don't Go Outside - when Tesco run big promotions - '50 cans of Carlsberg for £10 and your sister traded in' - they will sometimes put up big signs outside - pay attention - outside the store. Check these out the day after said promotion finishes - sometimes the outside signs are still in place - grab yourself a pallet of beer, argue with CS and check into AA in a couple of day’s time………..

Have fun Dudes - and remember to report your findings on the mis-price thread!

I was just going to ask how to spot mis prices! The big Yellow special offer stickers are easiest to check if they are out of date.

But as for 'the gotcha' - how can you tell before paying? Are all mis prices found this way purely through chance? The only way I can think of is to manually check the price of every item in your trolley before paying and compare to the SELS!

Different stickers to the SEL are a clue.

Also look at the item's price - if it seems too cheap, price-check it.

Look for special offers in the charts - see if the price has changed the following week....

If similar items have a £19.97 price tag and one item has a £19.94 tag - check it out!

Remember that CC points for reusing bags thing from a couple of weeks ago? Don't know any other details yet but it is coming soon. Guess the previous posters store was part of a trial.

I literally cannot wait to see the new and exciting ways savvy MSE'ers will create in order to make points! Will stores see a strange disapearance of boxes of carrier bags only to see a week later customers turning up with them trying to caim a thousand points?! Will the streets around Tesco stores suddenly become a lot cleaner as customers are picking up carrier bags left right and centre in chase of those "Green Points"?!

    I also have another question.

If your claim for a R+R is related to a yellow special offer which states, for example 'offer ends 01/08/06' - do they not have the right to say that the offer has ended, and that the offer ending date was clearly shown on the sign therefore they will refuse the R+R?

Very small exp date printing,as a gesture of goodwill Tescos generally agree with the buyer as it's misleading

If they said this to me, i'd just say i didn't realise i had to read the small print...i would've brought my glasses if i'd known!! the end date IS in really tiny writing, but the offer price is a decent readable size so you should be in the right and be entitled to R&R
  • Hi, my first post!

I purchased a Acer laptop yesterday [after seeing it in a flyer for 599.96]

Upon checking the receipt this morning, they charged me 599.94

the laptop was not displayed with a price on it as it was in the storeroom.

What are the chances of me complaining that I paid the wrong price....

I think I know the answer, if only it had been 2p more!!

    Afraid I disagree - sort of.....:o

It's not a gesture of goodwill - it is illegal to display misleading prices for products - simple as that.

The Price Promise is Tesco's way of wriggling out of any associated breach of the Sales of Goods Act.

If CS staff give you hassle over an expired SEL ask them: "Show me where the right price is displayed please".

They can't - you are overcharged - R&R - Head Office will back you up.
