  • I have unexpected guests for lunch at 12.30. I have rummaged around in the fridge and freezer and can come up with a mushroom and bacon quiche but I only have self raising flour or strong bread flour. Will either of these do in the absence of plain flour?:o

    Hi lillibet,

Self raising flour will be fine. My MIL always uses it in shortcrust pastry and it makes a slightly softer and more crumbly pastry than mine and works well in quiche.

  • Use the bread flour. I doubt anything untoward will happen.

I got 6 kg sr flour instead of plain and have just been using it for everything, including pastry. Works perfectly, and I agree, you get great pastry with it. Hope your guests enjoy lunch.

  • Phew! Lunch is ready.

I made a bacon and mushroom quiche, a green salad (cos lettuce, chicory, cress, cucumber, smoked ham and gruyere cheese with a mustard dressing), a tomato and avocado salad with basil and parsley (from the garden!) I have homemade bread sliced into hefty chunks to soak up the oil/vinegar dressing on the tomatoes and have just put some rice on to make Indonesian Nasi Goreng.

All without going to the shops!!!:T:T:T

Oh, nearly forgot - also made a pavlova (with eggs from my own chickens) filled with cherries from the freezer which were bartered last summer with the neighbour for some eggs
