I hadn't realised that some shows were broadcast live. How can you prove that you only watch pre-recorded programmes if live broadcasts are shown as well?

It usually says "watch live" somewhere on the programme link IIRC
We all evolve - get on with it
  • That reminds me of the old saying in teh TV industry:

    "recorded live"

    well duh...

There are a few forums with people who are fighting these guys.
Their suggestions are to write to the TVL people and remove their implied right to access your property so that they cannot set foot on it.
Further to that write stating you do not need a license and that you consider the matter finished with. Any further correspondance or vists from them will be considered harrassment and you will take them to court over it.

That's in a nutshell, you'd be best to google for one of the forums that deal specifically with it.

Essentially they are trying to sell you a product.
They have no legal rgith to enter your property. Say nothing to them over than get off my land till the letters are done. You don't legally have to interact with them, they are a private company.

    Try here.

Sorry to sound stupid but I thought recorded live, and then shown later online and broadcast live were different. Goes to show that you can learn something every day!
  • Got to wonder how they would be able to prove (non forensically) that because you have the 'net that you watch live TV.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

I don't think its a question of the programme being live or pre-recorded. The point is, as I understand it, if you watch or record broadcast TV (including via the web) a licence is needed.

Simple example - lets say being good moneysavers we decided that we needed to see the Budget speech in the House of Commons. A number of scenarios could arise.

    1. Switch on the telly and watch it live as it is transmitted - need a licence.
    2. Record it on a VHS recorder, Freeview+ box etc from an aerial as it is transmitted and watch it later - need a licence (because you received the live transmission - you just time shifted the viewing).
3 Go to BBC news website and watch the live footage on the website - again need a licence because you are watching live broadcast - you may not have a TV here but you still need a licence.
    4. Watch it on BBC i-player sometime after the event has finished - don't need a licence.

Sometimes the video on the BBC site (and probably others) is live footage which is going out simultaneously on one of its various channels - if you are watching this over the internet you do need a licence to watch it even if you don't even possess a TV or TV aerial.

They assume everyone in the UK mindlessly watches TV every day so unfortunately any property without a TV license pretty much gets the same treatment. I have a TV and a TV license but I don't watch it at all. Shame TV has become such a neccessity to so many people they question when someone actually doesn't watch it :P.
then you don't need a licence

really, television licence is a misnomer, the licence is for receiving broadcasts, not ownership of the equipment

I think a lot of confusion has arisen because the term 'live' is often use instead of 'as it's being broadcast'

for instance, you could be watching, say, an episode of Steptoe & Son, but you'd still need a licence if you're watching it as it's being transmitted
