wiring a 3- wire plug

I worked in an electrical shop in the 1980's and I saw table lamps with speaker type wire, (so no double protection) we had to replace plugs with sleeved plugs on all our electrical items, somebody even wired up an extension of TWO 13amp plugs rather than a plug n socket!!!
Rcd (circuit breakers for garden products etc.) went double pole then too.
These days most things come with a plug BUT often the wrong fuse!!! (end up with loads of 13amp fuses in drawer!)0
