if you think the yellow/green wire is the live wire - then you should NOT be wiring a plug up....

But if you REALLY insist and are not going to take the advice then

    Yellow/green - EARTH!
    Brown - Live
    Blue - Neutural

Where did I say I wan't taking advice-I think advice is what I asked for.And I am not wiring it-I am asking first.
  • as above.
    brown - live
    green - earth
    blue - neutral.

The way I remember it is that 'live' is the least likely colour you would choose - i.e. brown, green is like grass - which grows out of earth, and blue is just waht's left over! :D

    Is this thread is a wind-up? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Are you sure you ought to be connecting a 30+ year poduct to the National Grid if it hasn't been so connected for some years? TBH I'm not. If it is that old it won't have flex core colours of brown, blue and green/yellow. So is it just a plug you are rewiring?

Oh - on the off chance that it isn't:

like this with current standard colour flex:

Mum is 80 plus but is NEVER wrong-hence she got very snotty when i suggested it wasnt 60 years old! Unfortunately it isnt a wind up.I am not saying it hasnt been used for that long-i dare not ask i will get my legs slapped.
  • I think i remember her buying it in the seventies.he wont take advice-believe me,and she can afford to buy a new one.
  • We have one of those, dates from mid 70s, mind you we don't use it much these days. But it does still work fine.

You might be surprised! Equipment flex has conformed to brown/blue for a longtime - much longer than the European harmonisation for fixed installs. Anything manufactured for use across Europe has used brown/blue flex for donkey's now! I have a 30+ year old (non steam) iron I use for edge banding and that has brown/blue flex (albeit cotton covered!)

She reckons she bought it in singapore...60 years ago..she has told me..there is NOTHING wrong with her memory!! She was going to do it herself, comparing it to another plug in the house.

I think I'd be tempted "ever so sorry Mum but it was an accident - honest" to drop it on the floor and subsequently apply a little percussive maintenance. Will save a great deal in the cholesterol stakes and ensure no-one gets electrocuted.
