Hi does anyone know the proportion of people getting 1:1 , 2:1 and 2:2, when I was at uni a few years ago there would only be 1 or two people in the year (computing) that got a 1:1 a handfull of people of people getting a 2:1 and loads that got a 2:2. IS this still the case or have the number of people getting 1:1, and 2:1 gone up...... it would be intresting to find out......

I wasn't there to check the noticeboard, but in previous years, about two or three have received a first, about 35%-40% have received a 2:1, a lot of 2:2's and one or two thirds.

I'm not convinced the current degree classification system accurately reflects a persons abilities. Somebody who receives a grade of say, 80, which is a clear first (and next to impossible) and somebody who receives a 70, which is just a first, will be placed in the same class when it's clear there is a quite a difference of ability and/or work ethic.

Mine is a top ten uni, and I know it sounds arrogant, but my 2:1 is probably the same as a 1:1 from a place like say, the University of Luton. To hell with being politically correct. Not all degrees are the same as somebody pointed out.

My course requirement is AAB at A-level, but I think that's partly because it is quite popular. Just about everybody I know came to the course with a string of A's at A-level. But such grades don't seem to be an accurate indicator of final results. Somebody I thought was on track for a first has somehow ended up with a 2:2, which suggests too much partying to me as he clearly has the ability.

Only just got back to reading this thread. A viva is an interview with the external examiners. You get one of these if you are right on the boarderline between grades. It was dead scarey and i was asked loads of questions by four guys who just sat and stared at you. But they must have been in a good mood because they gave me a first.

    My degree was in Chemistry.

They awarded 4 firsts in my year. Considering were supposed to be one of the largest chemistry departments in the country it's not many in percentage terms about 4% i think possibly less. (not sure of exact numbers on my course)

Theres been a few people graduating in my year who had to see examiners regarding their %, namely people who are 1 or 2% off the next grade up.

They just want to know if you *know* your stuff and generally whether you 'deserve' it or not, providing you can prove you know enough about the subject its no issue.

-Often some people may have a bad module in the year, which drags their marks down, they may also interview regarding this in your final year.

Oh and I guess you can always ask about it if you're only a few % off the next grade, the worst they can do is say no, the best is that they say yes and you get pushed up :)

is this viva offered routinely to students, or do you have to ask? my daughter was just 2% off a 2.1 and this was because of a bad module choice. Should she ring the uni to see if this is possible?
    Thanks

It's not offered. You HAVE to have one if the external examiners pick you. It's the most scarey thing ever and if results ahve been issued the external examiners will have gone home and so won't be able to do any more vivas. They are done in one morning before the results are issued. Bassically they look through every peice of coursework or exam you've done and if they think you should have got a first/2.1 but mucked up a couple of exams they will call you in for this. They also viva some people just to check that the level of everybody getting a 2.1 is simliar in the unis of the same 'standard'. So you could get one if your bang slap in the middle of the grade. They only viva a very small proportion of candidates. And 2% off is a long way according to them, as this is averaged out over everything you've ever taken. We're talking .something of a % off to get a viva. i.e 69.5% for a first

we don't get our results until 19th of July! and they've decided not to publish results on the intranet or noticeboard.
