Travel cot as "normal" cot?

  • I got my son's cot second hand, it was £60 and I've been using it 2 and a half years so far with no problems!

We use my sons' travel cot as a playpen, he can quite safely stand up in it & it is robust enought to withstand this kind of use. If he falls asleep in it then obviously I don't worry, and it has been used overnight twice, but I wouldn't want to use it all the time. It just doesn't represent a bed & I could forsee problems when moving him to a bigger bed came along. Plus it's bigger than our cotbed (2nd hand plus new mattress & should suit him for 3-4 years £80) so quite draughty.

umm isnt there travel cot systems with set levels im sure graco do them, and as for the issue of the thickness of a mattress you can just buy a normal cot matteres and put it in the travel cot surely .... just some thoughts.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

I think the strain on her back when the baby is small would be huge. They're quite a weight to life practically from floor level when they can't put their arms round your nieck or sit up to help you. And you can't bend your knees because of the cot sides. It's all in your back.

I would shop around or try to find a second hand one and get a new mattress for it.

Also, I don't think a travel cot would last long once the baby is more mobile and trying to pull her/himself up on the sides.

Good luck for your friend's new arrival. Exciting times!

lol its not quite as easy as that ,there are supposed to be only a certain gap etc ,safety regs.so finding one that fits *perfectly* may prove difficult

i havent seen any "travel cot sized mattresses" anywhere  they are generally much smaller than a normal cot

i would and have happily used a travel cot for naps and wkends away but never even consider it for fulltime use   the graco with bassinet is fab and is just about to be used for its 3rd owner :)

i like the comparison to a Z bed for adults :D

I wouldn't use one all the time, aswell as the issue with bending all the time when they are tiny they are also very close to the floor which means draughty.

Pressuming you are in Australia of course. Surely there will be some cheaper ones available, a £25 travel cot sounds too cheap, I paid over £150 for ours.
One day I might be more organised...........

For a travel cot? Was it made of gold? Ours cost about £20. It was a new mamas and papas one in a sale. His actual cot didn't cost that either. I think it was about £100 in mothercare and we've just bought him a toddler bed recently. And that cost £60 new in a local baby supplies shop. Even with £70 for a matress it was still less than that.

My mum picked him up a travel cot in Asda I think it was before he was born. I think she got it for about £7. There is very little difference between the Asda one and the mamas and papas one. If anything, the cheaper one is lighter, easier to fold and seems to have a better matress.
