Travel cot as "normal" cot?

Popped into the shops at lunchtime with a friend of mine who is due to have her baby end of August. We were looking at the cots, it cost equivalent of £25 for a travel type cot or £150 for a proper wooden cot, but I couldnt see any reason why you couldnt just purchase the travel cot and use that.
Is there any reason why you cant?

The matress isn't as thick on a travel cot, so I don't think it would be as comfortable as a proper cot. Here I go again on my own....0

Firstly, this would mean bending over everytime you want to put the baby into the cot and get him/her out again. The number of times you would do this while the cot was in use will cause a huge strain on your back, especially as the baby gets heavier.
Also, it is difficult putting a sleeping baby into a travel cot and again to do so safely could lead to back problems.
Lastly, once the baby is big enough to start standing he/she will be pulling itself up on the sides. Travel cots (at least in my day) are not strong enough to sustain that on a daily basis. I am not sure they are even stable enough for that either.0 -
I guess the question would be how would your back fair to sleeping on a z bed all year, I think you would start having problems with your back, and the same applies to the cots and babies.
To give a child the best start in life, I think a good bed/cot, and shoes and the best nutrition you can achieve are all the key factors.0 -
we got our cot on ebay, bought a new mattress and it's fab. we have a little travel cot for now too.0

I used a travel cot for my DD with a basin type insert like THIS so none of the back bending talked about in previous posts. It then turned into a play pen when she started to toddle. Paid about £40 at a car boot and got two years worth of use out of it before selling it for £30I haven't got one!0

My DD wont sleep in a normal cot! She is 15months old and still sleeps in her travel cot. For some reason she just doesnt like the normal cot. When i spoke to the health visitor about it as i was quite concerned about it, and was basically told if she prefers it and is happy to do so then leave her to it and it wont do her any harm. With the imminent birth of my 3rd child due to happen any day now, i need my travel cot back lol What i intend to do now is buy her a toddler bed with attached side rails so she cant fall out, she is quite happy to sleep on my bed and her brothers bed so im hoping this will be the solution that im hoping for!The Only Thing Men Can Do Right Is Get Everything Wrong

I don't think a travel cot for £25 will be as comfortable long term as cot - the matress will be too thin for long term use - alright for a holiday etc. You can get cots cheaper than £150 - the local paper and buy a new matress. I bought a cot bed for less than that - they are quite often on offer.0

Youngest only ever slept in a travel cot as we didn't have space for the 'proper' one. Yes, he was a lump to get in and out of it as he grew but it doesn't seem to have done him any harm and he slept well in it so can't have been that uncomfortable!
BUT it was a mega sturdy one, that didn't tip and rock, and he couldn't climb out of it. My friend had a much cheaper one and we couldn't use it after the kids were standing because they could climb out / tip it over.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
i brought my daughters cot from ikea for £22 ish. its basic but has 3 levels so you dont have to bend down when the baby is little! You have to buy a matress to, which was abouth £15-£20. I reckon this would be more comfy for a little one as the mattress on a travel cot are really thin - when i go away i use blankets to make it more comfy!!
