PC World Issue

Hi there, been browsing this site on and off for a few months but have now signed up as i need some advice
I purchased a PC Tower on Boxing Day last year (26/12/08) on the 19th of December 2009 it has broken
I took the PC Tower back to the store i purchased it from and was told im only entitled to a repair,i did quote the SOGA and the manager said the only thing i could have was the repair
I wasnt happy to hear this because the Tower cost £528.49 and to me it should last a whole lot longer than what it has done
I came across this from the PC Buyer Beware website (cant link to it with me being new)
Can anyone help me on this matter please and inform me on what to do,do i have rights to get a replacement or do i have to accept that i will only be able to have the repair?
Thank you

Anyway i rang them up today to state the above and got told i was reading the wrong SOGA even though it linked to the amended one on the BBC Watchdog page, then i got put onto a manager who said he wasnt legally trained to answer anything regarding the SOGA and that his answer would not change and that it would only be the repair and nothing else,i found this person on the phone to be smug and wasnt at all helpful, just kept repeating the same thing so in the end i just came off the phoneYour rights under the Sale of Goods Act in the UK
It is well worth noting that the Sale of Goods Act in the UK protects the purchase of goods over their expected useful life.
This is valuable protection for goods that have an expected useful life that is longer than the standard 12-month warranty. It means that if the product, such as a desktop or laptop computer, has an expected useful life of four years, its owner can get it repaired or replaced if it dies within that period, regardless of any warranties, standard 12-month or extended. All computers should have a useful life of at least four years, so it is a waste of money to buy an extended warranty for a desktop or laptop computer. However, the vendor or manufacturer will probably try every trick in the book to avoid having to repair or replace a computer that is out of its warranty period and which has no extended warranty. That said, if you have the product examined by a reputable third party and then insist on your rights under the Sale of Goods Act, if the product fails within its expected useful life, you will always be entitled to having it repaired or replaced.

Repair or replace is at sellers discretion.0

You do not have the right to a refund or a replacement - the retailler can decide whether to repair (within a "reasonable timescale"), replace or refund.
Normally, repairs on desktop PCs are done instore and usually only take a few days (it will be diagnosed, appropriate parts ordered up etc) so you should not be without it for long. These repairs are generally done by TechGuys technicians (not the in-store ones) as PC World has agreements with most manufacturers to do warranty repairs on their behalf.
Some PC World managers will give loan machines to customers whilst a machine is away for repair (although this is at discretion and usually for business customers only).
As a matter of interest, what was the fault?Dogs have owners...my cat has slaves...0 -
So even though im still under warranty i can only have a repair?
@xocbc Unsure tbh,the power light comes on but it does nothing else, the display turns itself off as there is no signal going to it and also the Router light for that specific port doesnt light up (where its plugged into the PC)
It was working perfectly that day but later just had this issue where it wouldnt come on
Tried putting a disc in the drive and it spins round but nothing comes up on the screen (which eventually turns itself off as no signal is going to it)
Also noticed there is no HDD light
Thanks for the advice people0 -
"So even though im still under warranty i can only have a repair?"
Yes, unfortunately, you are only entitled to a repair.
Re the fault, could be any number of things, possibly motherboard, one of the PSU rails or a component. It shouldn't take them too long to diagnose it. Normally in these circumstances, the TechGuys technician will bring a number of bits with him so he doesn't have to make a return trip.Dogs have owners...my cat has slaves...0 -
A repair should be fine.. and that's all you're entitled to.0

If you read the warranty, it'll say that.
If you didn't have a warranty, right now, you'd be looking (and paying) for someone to create a report about the fault, then asking PC world to remedy the fault.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
