We did a Seafari from near Oban, and it was awesome.

The boat is similar to the rafts the lifeboats use and they zoom really fast over the water. You'll see masses of wildlife in the sea, on the islands and in the air. The best bit was when we stopped the boat over a bait ball (a group of little fish moving just under the surface of the water) and the sea birds were diving into the water around us and picking the fish out. Amazing experience and my boys loved it
Here I go again on my own....

Via Feratta - Classic this is amazing climbing up the side of a slate mine I did it a couple of years ago. I have just visited the website you can do it as a zip wire now. I can see myself having to go back now.

The shell grotto might not be as exciting as some of the other suggestions, but I always thought it was odd & bizarre :D

If you fancy heading for the far far north there's Smoo cave

Also if you want an alternative new year (although may be a bit short notice for this year) Stonehaven have a Fireball procession through the town, with the balls being thrown into the harbour at the end.

Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

    Chinese New Year in Chinatown?

    Notting Hill Carnival?

I was also going to suggest Glastonbury, if you've not been before, but it's sold out for 2010 already.

    Enjoy whatever you do.
  • You lot are brilliant!!! I love the idea of the Minack - they're doing Kafka in JUne - yey! And love Via Ferreta and the others. Have done a Ghost Tour already - the one in York, highly reccomended! Thanks everyone!

Why not enter some "world championships"? :D I've been to the world gurning championships in Egremont (Cumbria), the world Crabbing championships (Suffolk - Walberswick I think), world Toe Wrestling championships (can't remember where exactly, I did it about 10 years ago - but Staffordshire or Derbyshire I think), and the cheese rolling in Gloucester. I wimped out and stuck to being a spectator at the cheese rolling, but have entered the others (failing to win any of them of course!!) - it's something different to do anyway, and I'm sure there must be a few others around the country you could give a go! :j:D
  • What great ideas, not exactly odd or different but I have always fancied Go Ape, be a monkey for the day http://www.goape.co.uk/

  • how about a circus workshop? something i'd like to do this year! also, go through your address book (or the christmas cards you received)- how about setting up visits to people you haven't seen for ages (old school friends, people you met on hols). Can ask them what the must see/do event is there and even if you only see them for an hour it's got you somewhere different x
