broken elbow, disability allowance

I don't think it is that you are never entitled to anything, just that a disability, for DLA purposes, has to have lasted three months and is likely to continue for at least a further six months. Although having a temporary disability is inconvenient and unpleasant, not to mention painful, it is a comparitively short term condition. You may be in pain whilst carrying your daughter, but at least you can carry her. I hope that your recovery is speedy and complete.0

I'm sorry, I know I'll be shot down in flames for this, but... are you for real?
You want DLA for a broken elbow?
What's wrong with your other arm, surely you can use it to carry out day to day basic tasks?
Funnily enough; "cannot tie my hair" isn't a reason to award DLA - heck, a lot of us on DLA have to go about with our hair like a burst couch, despite [prior to illness/disability] being perfectly groomed each day, because just getting out of bed of a day is an achievement in its self, never mind 'doing' your hair.
You can carry your daughter about - some DLA claimants can't even carry themselves about, let alone anyone else, because the fatigue/ muscle spasms/paralyses/ blackouts etc make that impossible day to day, year after year.
You can prepare a meal for yourself - at least you won't starve, unlike the many DLA claimants who are unable to be even trusted, on their own, with a sharp knife/ boiling hot water/gas cooker etc. Sometimes it's easier just to starve than to risk burning the flat down if you fall asleep and leave something in the oven. I dropped down to 6st using this method, it's not to be recommended.
And you think a broken bone makes you eligible? Fancy swapping your life with mine?
I'll see your broken elbow and I'll raise you a broken toe, cracked ribs, split skull, soiled trousers (on far too many public occasions). All of which I've experienced because of my condition, not as reasons to dig out the claim pack.
I'm thankful for the fact we have DLA, which I get, it's saved me having my flat repossessed (after I had to give up work due to disability) and seeing me on the streets as a consequence. It was a hard laborious struggle to get it in the first place, and I have a genuine debilitating condition, but I still have to reapply every few years. If every broken bone was eligible then we'd have no benefit to speak of.
At least now I can pay for a carer, without worrying about the mortgage. She showers me, makes sure my hair's clean, makes me food that I can [if need be microwaved later] have without harming myself, and my neighbours, she's a God Send. I had to lose my dignity though, can you imagine a stranger seeing you naked/soiled when you're 28?
So OP, any time you fancy swapping your life - partner, healthy child, dodgy elbow but otherwise able to work, with mine, give me a shout.
The Crohns, the M.E., the blackouts, muscle spasms, the" not even feeling as though you're part of the human race" etc etc etc
I'll gladly swap my £DLA for you.
Go ahead, put a claim in
ETA: I was 25 when I took ill, 28 before I had a DLA payment to pay for a carer - thanks to the CAB I stopped my house repossession, council tax discount etc etc . I'm now 33 and as thankful now, as as I was the day she arrived, that I have her.0 -
@ OP: From February is 10 months already (I'm presuming you meant Feb this year as baby is only 4 months old) and it is in the nature of children to get bigger and heavier and less compliant. Needing help to have a bath, do your hair, put on clothes (e.g. bra) is a care need. OK so at 4 months she can't run away yet, but neither can she sit up in a bath and not having full use of two arms on a slippery baby is a potential hazard. When's the OP, how long a recovery period will it need and what outcome does the consultant expect?
I'm not saying that you are entitled, just that sometimes it's difficult to get across what problems you're actually having - in the same way that NHS direct refused me a doctor for the 'sore throat' when I couldn't even drink and a day later the GP was telling me off for not calling her out to treat such a severe throat infection...
Don't forget, we can't see you. We can only go by what you say in your posts.
P.S. I am a mum with ME who gets HM & MC DLA, who has a healthy 2 yr old and !!!!!! her pants like Lou76.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Sorry, I've just realised what an !!!! I sound in my reply.

I was replying on the basis of having a sh*tty week (no need to take it out on anyone else, that's no excuse), and all this talk of Christmas doesn't help, rather than being my objectional self. lol
I'm sorry to anyone I've offended, it wasn't my intention, honest.0 -
i understand lou76 your situation is much worse than mine.
its not as if i am saying im upset that i cant get dvla it was just a thought and i wanted to share and ask on the forum if i was entitle to it.Simples ;-)
Daska, i think im more upset as something small has turned into something big due to me been pregnant the doctor didnt want to xray as a precaution kept me in plaster for long time which, in turn has caused a lot of vains to die due to lacck of blood circulation. this has now caused me to go for another surgery which i will be having in march exact a year before i had the elbow recnstructed.
this is stoping me from trying for another baby as i wanted to have a baby straight away. I just avaoid picking my baby up feed her, burp her and my arm gets tired so i put her back in bouncer.0 -
Shabana, the only way u will know it by applying. A colleague of mine gets a rate of dla, altho he only has one and a half arms.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

Have you had an OT assessment? There may be ways and means and equipment to help. Your consultant or GP can do this, as can Adult Social Services (who have a duty to support you in your parenting role) if you can't self-refer (Children's Social Services have a legal responsibility to protect your child - very different.) The other people to talk with are the Disabled Parent's Network, again they are a fount of practical advice. personally I'd have a word with the local CAB and see what their view is, they will at least be able to see you in person, until then have a think about what you would normally do that you now can't do at all or without help, keeping a diary sometimes helps.Eat food. Have you discussed this with your health visitor? They should be one of your first ports of call - they will be able to refer you to other services which may be able to help you. They will also be able to liaise with SS etc and to help get you help more quickly.
As dmg as said you need to have a debilitating condition that affects the quality of your life to such an extent that you need to have help to carry out basic living tasks. They will not take into account that you want another child quickly, that is a matter of choice rather than necessity.
Were you working before your child was born? Can you not to return to work at all? Have you checked www.entitledto.co.uk to see what you may be eligible for?Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -
