Cleaning floors (merged threads.)

I have been getting down on my hands and knees and washing the floors with a cloth, some washing up liquid and vinegar, then using a little kitchen roll to dry them and remove streaks. But I'm sick of it. The cloths I use sit for ages until I've got enough to put in the washing machine with the bath mat etc.
So I bought a dolly mop. Which should be easier on my back. But now what?
What do you put in the water? How do you keep the mop head clean and smell free without dumping bleach in the water? And how and where do you store it? At the moment mine's in the cellar head with the mop bit facing down. But I haven't used it yet. (Still on with the cloths.)
And is this a dopey question?

I use a mop and bucket. I don't know what a dolly mop is. Not too sure what mine is called but the mop is long grey strands & the bucket has a foot pedal which you squeeze the excess water out of.
I use only hot water & vinegar to wash the floors. After I finished I rinse with hot water and leave out resting on the back verandah in the sun. I don't bleach it. It stays good for ages & then after quite a while the strands come out & then I need to replace the mop head only.
You must have good knee's.Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0 -
Hi, I'm not sure what a dolly mop is, either. But I use a mop & bucket - my mop is a vileda one, & when it needs cleaning I take the head off & put it through the washing machine.
I use whatever all multi purpose cleaner I have to hand - currently stardrops or a lidl own brand, with hot water. I empty the bucket down the loo - working on the principle that the water & cleaning stuff is doing 2 jobs for the price of 1!!!
If the weather is good, I leave the mop in the garden - head uppermost - to dry in the sun, before storing it standing in the bucket. If it's not such good weather it stands in the kitchen upside down in the bucket till dry, hope that makes sense!0 -
I bought a Tesco value mop, with a string head.It unscrews and you can put it in the washing machine.
I must admit I just put dirty cleaning cloths in with dishcloths and tea towels. It doesn't take long to accumulate enough for a load.0 -
Ordinary long-haired mop, when I finished using it I hook over my washing line to dry off.
I use just a small squeeze of washiing up liquid and a splash of Dettol or any disinfectant..Two buckets one with soap in and the other as hot as possible with clean water for rinsing. Wearing rubber gloves you can wring out the mop head when rinsing off the soapy water. After washing I always put some newspapers on the floor so you can walk on the floor whilst it dries. I have been doing it this way for the last fifty years, as did my Mum before me.0 -
Thanks everyone. A dolly mop is just one of the ordinary string type mops. (I thought everyone called them that. I don't know where I got it from now!)May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

I use a micro fibre flat mop with warm water and a few drops of washing up liquid. It`s very good and the cloth just sticks with velcro and then gets slung in the wm. Another of my qvc buys before I stopped the addiction0

I've just bought a steam cleaner and used it 3 times now to do my floor - it's great - comes up so clean....
I used to stand my mop upside down in the bath until it was dry."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
OOO! Now then. I am thinking about getting a steam cleaner for the beds and sofas because I'm allergic to dust mites. I didn't realise you could wash floors with them too.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

Steam cleaners are worth their weight in gold!
Kills bacteria, dust mites and odours (we have a dog).
Ours also doubles up as a steam generator iron. One of my best buys, I have to say.de do-do-do, de dar-dar-dar0 -
Normal mop, plus Ecover Floor Soap. Leaves a lovely sparkle and orangey smell (hope I'm not inventing words!). Not the cheapest, but I use half the recommended amount to stretch it.0
