    simple, really

file a chargeback with your barclay card

you paid paypal to pay a seller for an item that never arrived, you're covered by your barclaycard insurance

why on earth, as a person with over 100 feedback and 3 years on ebay you were stupid enough to give 1000 quid to a person with 0 feeback and registered for only a few months i'll never know :-(, this is as much your fault as paypal's
    money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

  • File a fraud claim with Barclaycard. they investigated a claim of mine a year ago and I got my money back. paypal got a bit upset and sent me a snotty email.

My considered opinion on the email after careful thought was Ars*holes to 'em

Why on earth did you place such a high bid when the seller has 0 feedback? The picture is just a stock photo which usually makes you question as to whether the seller actually has the item in his/her possession. You aren't exactly a newbie eBayer, I would have thought that you would have known better. The auction listing is !!!!, what made you bid?

I dont see where the "misslead in small print" comes into it ?
There is always going to be a few bad elements on ebay but if you're carefull you can avoid them (by not bidding on things for huge prices).
There should be a warning somwhere that most auctions that look too good to be true usually are (digi cameras, phones, laptops worth £1000's going for small percentage of their actual value).

Well...we all mistakes, eh? ...and I bet you won't buy another £1,000 item on ebay without giving it abit of thought!
It could have been worse - I once paid for something by debit, rather than credit card, my goods never arrived - because the company went bankrupt...and i lost my money because debit cards have no cover with them...I felt a complete and utter wombat (tho that was for no where near £1k...at least you paid by credit card so have the potential to get the money back.
and PLEASE don't do it again!!!
    Good luck

    Not strictly true.

    PayPal is actually 2 transactions.

In transaction 1, you pay PayPal say £100 and ask them to send it to X.
In transaction 2, PayPal takes the £100 from your card and passes it onto X.

You never pay X directly and X is not involved in the transaction between your card and PayPal.

If the card company wants to be picky, they can say they fulfiled their side of the bargain as they paid PayPal £100 as you intended. They are not interested in what happens to the money after that, as their part is over.

However, card companies can be leniant and may get involved although they have no obligation to do so.

Try a Barclaycard chargeback and see how you get on, but be prepared that it might not work.
Here I go again on my own....

This reminds me of the thread Ebay fraud. Can I ask my CC company for a chargeback?, which in turn links back to a thread started by Becles. The two step process isn’t fundamentally different from any of the other payment service providers. You wouldn’t expect to be prevented from requesting a chargeback, because the online shop you bought from took the payment using a company like WorldPay. PayPal used to argue that they are special because they deal in “e-money”, but they lost that argument with Visa and MasterCard.

So you decided to buy one from an unreliable source? If I needed a telly for the World Cup I'd nip down to Argos or something. The urgency of the need for it would make me less likely to buy from eBay. Oh well, there's a saying that the only real mistakes are those you don't learn from, and I'm sure you've learned from this one. I hope you at least have a telly from somewhere now.
The fact a degree of naivety, one might even go as far as to say stupidity, is necessary to bid a high price on an auction like this does not make the scammer any less guilty. I hope they get what they deserve and that you get your money back, but it's doubtful.
