Oh and before you say about maybe we intalled the one you have to pay for, I re-installed the free version one as on download.com site as well.0

that must have been a very old recommendation
AVG is very poor, go onto the techie board on here and you'll find heaps of people having its latest version cause problems and it is trailing in independant tests of how effective it is at stopping viruses.
Suggest you try either:
avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
or Microsoft security essentials
or Avira (if they've solved the problems they were having with their update servers a few months back)
also be sure to download the 'free indefinitely for home use' version rather than the 'paid for premium version' as you appear to have done with AVG (which is why you have only a x day trial)0 -
'AVG is very poor' ....
If you actually do a search in these forums for 'AVG' as I have just done as suggested you will see more satisfied users than dissatisfied. Go ahead and try the search.
If you go an AV comparison site mentioned in these forums and read the Comparative summary report from November 2009 you will see Avast detected 53 vs AVGs 49% - neither of the in the top group - and a statement saying all the tested AV products if used correctly will provide good protection.
The report is here - section 4 is the summary. Have quick read and make your own mind up.

AVG is not up to much anymore.
Lots of free products around that are better and do not give all the false reports that AVG gives.
Dont try and play online poker if using AVG it thinks they are all viruses. Thats typical0 -

yes you do a forum search and actually you find the vast majority are like the one above quite validly steering people away or relating one of a number of problems with it recently.... -I'll repeat my earlier advice to avoid it, this time backed by the MSE forum search function

Pointed a friend to this recently, and she found she gets licenses for 3 computers.
Thanks to OP.
If/when you do download any other anti virus, ensure you first remove ALL existing AV programmes first.si talia jungere possis sit tibi scire satis 0 -
Yes, AVG is quite poor. It used to be okay. I've disinfected a relative's PC which was very heavily infected with many different bits of malware despite AVG being installed, up-to-date and functioning "okay".
Microsoft Security Essentials, plus Malwarebytes, are the best things available at the moment.0 -
AVG is neither quite poor or very poor. Anyone saying that has no idea what they're talking about.
You can have any security you like on your machine and if people still install trojans and viruses willingly then the security will allow it.
If you download AVG from AVG's site you'll usually install the paid for version so get the truly free version from here www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus/
I recommend www.microsoft.com/security_essentials or www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus for most people anyway. Again, if you are an idot it will not be enough to protect your home. Stop installing crap.0 -

Lot of techie people on here must have no idea what they are talking about then:rolleyes:
I think the OP only wanted info on anti-virus software not some sort of home protection. We all evolve - get on with it0 -
i'd agree , use AVG myself...download the file from above and it removes the old version and does the update for youEx forum ambassador
