. . . to pay in over 1k to cover pending cheque. Paid in monies, cashier smiled, thank you etc etc. . . . hubby had counted money wrong and was £5 out

If it was cash and the cashier stamped the paying in slip, how do you know your hubby got it wrong?

If they can't do the job properly, they should find something else a little less taxing.
Clearly the perfect one has spoken.:rolleyes: Everybody, normal people that is, makes mistakes, so come off your horse.
  • They charged me £38 for the priviledge of course, but better than the embarrassment of a bounced cheque.

[Please note I am not recommending A&L to anyone by the way - the reason I went over my limit was because their rubbish online banking has locked me out of my account for more than 3 months now, and their telephone banking advisor wrongly told me that there were sufficent funds in the account to pay the cheque....]

If it was A&L's mistake that caused you to go overdrawn then why does it sound like you're accepting this £38 fee instead of complaining?

When bank account holders' make mistakes and go overdrawn on bank accounts, banks don't say, well they're only human, we all make mistakes, we won't charge them for it.

Would the bank really bounce the cheque for £5?

Like you, I'd have expected them to pick it up Bassett. Ours is always meticulous about checking the cash we bank, down to the last note and penny....

When paying in large sums of money I always tell them the incorrect amount.
Thus there is always extra checking done to make sure it's the right number going into the computer.

Why would there be "extra checking" done? Unless you walk up to a counter and say: "Riddle me this, do I have £500 or £505 in this pile of money?" - and then proceed to throw all the money in the air, so that cashier really has to work for their wage.

Cashiers should do a count to check regardless of what you tell them, this amount will then be printed on the receipt. At which point there is plenty of time to spot any error. Being awkward before you deposit, isn't any less of a fail safe than checking your receipt.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

This is the sort of thing that cashiers despise ... people who think they're being clever, when actually, it would be far better for the cashier, the customer, and anyone waiting in the queue if you were honest from the outset.
