You can ring John Lewis and ask them: they are very open about it, or were last week when I bought their own brand fridge (AEG for my model).

I wouldn't normally take out a warranty either, certainly not if it's a third of the purchase price! I did take out the warranty on this fridge, as it was only £33 to extend the warranty from 3 to 5 years.

Forget extended warranties. What most people don't realise is that they are covered anyway by their statutory rights. If a product such as a washing machine has an expected life of say 7 years, if it breaks down after 3 years (even outside of the 12month warranty) the company can be pursued for repair.

They might not have the model you are after on their website, however just give them a call for a price.

I've bought from them and was impressed by price and service. My last purchase was a washing machine which was way below anyone else's price and was delivered the day after I ordered it.

I've just bought a dishwasher from them today for my mum - it's being delivered on Monday and they will phone me tomorrow with a 2 hour delivery slot. I just paid £299 for an end-of-line dishwasher that was over £600 at other retailers. Brand new boxed.

do what i do, buy the appliance with a credit card that gives extended cover. I get a additional year with my nationwide card, have to register within 60 days of purchase.

Thank you all. I`m all of a sudden not sure about the LG washer dryer so am having another look round. Will just have to use the washing machine of mum and dad whilst they will take in washing for me!!

Will give J L a ring thanks, didn`t realise they would tell you.

Think I will stay away from extended warranties now whatever I buy unless I can get it thrown in for free.

I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)

I get a free 2 year warranty on large appliances from my bank account (natwest).

My nan bought me a washer dryer and a cooker from comet, with the insurance, the washing machine had 5 repairs in it's first year. My advice is never, EVER buy a washer dryer. I had both appliances written off by the insurance, because they both broke a lot. I also say get the best you can afford, because the insurance write off came at the original price, it meant i paid an extra £20 for a bosch washing machine (still going!) and an extra £170 for a Zanussi cooker which is much bigger than the heap of crap the belling one turned out to be (it had all it's bits replaced, the last time i told the engineer not to bother ordering the parts and spent all evening going up the customer services chain at Comet, and they sent me a voucher the next day)

Whether I myself would buy a warranty depended on it's terms, But I'm eternally grateful that my nan bought my appliances when i was struggling and took insurance out for me because otherwise I'd have a 1970's cooker and washing machine from a dodgy second hand shop now!

  • check as well, is the warranty for parts only ? Ie you have to pay for labour?
