I am considering the BT 6GB deal at £20 a month but is has norton and I don't want that

Any suggestions gratefully received!

It would be cheaper to go for a different provider but get your own router because ISP's tendto charge loads for those. I'm also looking for broadband but despite many people alleging that the "price will drop" i am yet to see this.

I did try buying my own router, but when we tried to connect it up to the modem supanet have given us there was no usb port on it to do this. so we gave up and took it back to currys and got our money back. We even bought a wireless adaptors and that wasnt the right thing either. So i just figured If I got this stufff from an ISP IT HAD to be the right stuff i needed?

well if you got a wireless router modem, you wont need your supanet modem - since the wireless router will have a modem inside it - you just need to set it up correctly

If you buy the right wireless modem/router there will be plenty of people on MSE who can help you set it up correctly so please don't let the setting up put you off :)

Post on here what PCs/laptops you have, how many? Are any wireless enabled? Post the model number if you are unsure.

That way we can give advice on the best equipment for the job. Some routers come with wireless cards, others do not. As I mentioned in the other thread, you don't necessarily need a wireless card for every PC.

You will also need to buy an ADSL Modem/Router, some don't have built in modems, but if it says ADSL on the box, then you know it has an in-built modem. As others have said, you don't use your USB modem; this is only for direct connection to a PC.

Thanks for offer of help (all of you)

I have a PB IMEDIA1307 PC and an acer note book travelmate 2423WXMi

I think this is the info you are looking for, if not please put me right. I really don't know the spec on either of them, they were selected by my ex hubby.

Thanks, that tells us what we need to know.

The Acer laptop is already wireless enabled, so you don't need a wireless card for that.

The Packard Bell desktop PC is not wireless enabled, but does have a network (LAN) socket.

Is your desktop PC within reach of the telephone line, or if not, could you run a phone extension without it getting in the way?

Do you currently use your desktop PC to access the internet?

Yes i currently use the desk top to connect to internet and it has a phone extension with a splitter? to connect to the internet. I have heard somewhere that I should get some sort of a hub to plug into PC?

So your phone line reaches to your desktop PC. The 'hub' you refer to is known as a router.

From what you've said, you only need a router. You don't need any cards to go into your desktop or laptop because they already have what you need built in.

You need a Wireless ADSL Modem/Router. This connects directly to the telephone line, in the same way that your current modem connects. The desktop PC connects to the modem/router using the network cable supplied with it and your laptop connects by wireless signals (using the in-built wireless capabilities).

So which router should you buy? I have a US Robotics one from Amazon.co.uk. I purchased it a few months ago and found Amazon to be the cheapest for this particular model. It's been great [touch wood] and is now £78.65 from Amazon.

The Linksys WAG354G Wireless-G ADSL 2+ Modem Router Gateway, 4-Port Switch & Access Point also appears to be suitable at £64.90.
