I think the Zune is much better than iPod. I swapped my iPod for a Zune 2.0 8GB about 18 months ago and I've never looked back :T
The Zune software (IMO) is also a hell of a lot better than iTunes.
I made the same jump, but to the 120GB Zune. I agree with you about the software, it's just a shame that at the moment Microsoft haven't launched the service properly for international users.
That said, for the time being to simply play MP3s when I'm at work or in the car I'm more than happy with it.0 -

But I do recognize that iTunes and iPods are now a pretty ubiquitous product, and the reference of iTunes as an assumption that you'll have it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Just out of interest, have you tried a Zune, or the Zune software?
TBF I've not tried the Zune, but did have a play with the early versions which I didn't like, and they were poorly received. However I have tried many other music players after the iPod was launched, Sony completely missed the boat too. None I found to have such an intuitive interface or made to such a high quality as the iPod. However there are some with better sound quality for purists, but for me, as long as you dump the white earbuds, it's hard to beat.
However I've had various iPods since they came to market, and all still work perfectly, all have terrific interfaces, and for me, I tend to sync them and the family's on Macs not our PCs, so find iTunes a joy, it is terrific software on the Mac. Beautiful interface and works seamlessly, the integration and success of the iTunes Store is quite astonishing too. I think it gets a bit of a hard time on Windows though, I rarely use it on XP/Win 7 at all. Still you can use MediaMonkey, Floola, YamiPod WinAmp etc or many other alternatives, mostly free all for Windows, all with their own followings.
For me the Nano is the perfect small music player and the iPod Touch, well, it's stunning.
My post was mainly a dig at the pointless OPs post!0 -

It's so good, Microsoft discontinued it.

The Zune software is quite nice. I don't think it's "a hell of a lot better than iTunes", though iTunes could certainly do with a refresh.0 -

I had an iPod in one form or another for about 4-5 years. In all that time, and with all the hours I spent organizing my tracks and albums, it was never organized quite right. I gave up in the end as it was too big of a task. On the day I got my Zune, all organizing was finished within 4 hours. As a first impression for me, it was very impressive. And it remains that easy. To add music, all I need to do is add the files to my Music folder and it will appear in Zune, and automaticall sync to the Zune wirelessly. That's the main reasons it's better for me, but that's just my opinion

They may still be selling it, but they ain't making it:I met with the Zune folks today and one bit of information than I can discuss immediately is that the Zune HD will be the only device type going forward: The current Zune models, the Zune 8, 16 80, and 120, have all been discontinued. So if you want a classic Zune device, buy it now, as they'll only be around while supplies last. The Zune HD goes on sale September 15 in 16 GB and 32 GB variants.

(and by the way, I hate that phrase "going forward" - time always goes forward, so I've always wondered why some people need to clarify this. Are there times when it goes backwards?)I had an iPod in one form or another for about 4-5 years. I don't think I've spent much time organising my music in iTunes. Smart playlists take care of most of the work.
Wireless syncing is a nice feature, but I don't know if I could see myself using it much (though I am considering an Eye-fi card for my camera). On the day I got my Zune, all organizing was finished within 4 hours. Ah. Fair enough then! I'm hoping I'll be upgrading to a Zune HD soon anywayThey may still be selling it, but they ain't making it:

I like to make sure my track names, artist names, album info, album art etc. is there and correct. I just found iTunes was not very good at getting this right, although Zune did it all extremely well. Particularly for ripped CDs etc. The "Find album info" feature in Zune sofware is very good.I don't think I've spent much time organising my music in iTunes. I use it quite a lot, as my computer is downstairs, and my Zune spends 90% of its time in my bedroom on its dock since I changed my car and no longer have a tape deck to use the adapter  The dock is connected to the power for charging and some speakers for sound, and there's a nice feature (I have no idea if iPods do this too) where as soon as you dock a Zune, it looks for the network and syncs with the PC automatically.Wireless syncing is a nice feature, but I don't know if I could see myself using it much (though I am considering an Eye-fi card for my camera).
I also found it very handy when I did use it in the car, as I could download any new podcasts or music, then sync to my Zune without having to hunt for the cable. Very useful when you're just heading out the door.
By the way I'd just like to apolgize for not thanking anyone, as for some reason it's not working for me at the moment :rolleyes:The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

I heard about Eye-Fi a few months ago, and I love the idea of it. I've been looking for a good excuse to get one ever since...The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

Ah, I see. We Mac users have AppleScripts for doing pretty much anything in iTunes.I use it quite a lot, as my computer is downstairs, and my Zune spends 90% of its time in my bedroom on its dock since I changed my car and no longer have a tape deck to use the adapter  The dock is connected to the power for charging and some speakers for sound, and there's a nice feature (I have no idea if iPods do this too) where as soon as you dock a Zune, it looks for the network and syncs with the PC automatically.
iPods don't support wireless syncing (though I would have thought it would be pretty easy for Apple to implement). You can however, buy songs directly from the iTunes Store on an iPod Touch.I heard about Eye-Fi a few months ago, and I love the idea of it. I like the idea that when I turn my camera on, it can connect to my router and backup all my photos to Picasa without the need to be at my computer.0 -
An mp3/4 player from Aldi will do the job just as well imho, as will Media Player Classic, in Windows it's small and lightweight.
As for Linux, loads to choose from.
If someone wants an Ipod, that's their choice. pointless finding fault with it, besides, Leopard may even now be waiting to pounce.0
