Sorry Sol00, I might have got the timescale wrong. The rules are complicated. I am going to try and look into it further. There is another thread "Halifax & Tesco", in Banking & Budgeting about this. Mikeyorks, has also posted that after the authorisation drops off they are not obliged to pay the money, which is what I always thought. He has invited people who work for banks to disagree so he is probably more up-to-date with the rules than I am, but will keep searching. This is simply unjust in my opinion.

Don't you people ever check your bank statements? You should have noticed that you hadn't been charged back in October.
Does this unhelpfull comment make you feel clever?, the term "You people" is very derogatory, who are you Royalty?!

My bank only sends out statements every 3months...the very same thing happened to me last Novemeber, then i noticed in my Jan statement £125 debited from Tesco, turned out they hadnt taken the money in November but waited until January, and what with massess of christmas shopping, and no bank statement it was very very easy to lose track,no letter no notice, just an unexpected debit,i was fortunate to have enough money in to cover it,but a letter of explanation from Tesco wouldve been appreciated.
Thanks OP,appreciate this,im off to check if i was working 24th Oct-hope so,as it means i wouldnt have been in Tesco, therefore wont have been bitten twice.

Another one here, apparently shopped instore on 24th October spending £21.91 (interestingly two other payments to Tesco on that day did go through properly on the actual day- £25 at tesco garage and £3.19 in store).

This only went out of account on 15th December, totally unexpectedly and has led to £25 "payment review item paid fee" and £15 over overdraft fee.

Really not happy about this, how could they manage to process the other two payments that day and not this one?
  • I for one would have been very gratful to recieve a letter from tesco stating

'We are very sorry due to a problem with our finance department we did not debit accounts from the 24th october, therefore will be taking payment for these products on the .....dotdotdot....of .....dot.dot.dot......'

That would have been nice at this time of year, spes with crimbo. I am sooooooooo furious over this whole stupid debacle. Yes, we are partly to blame but i will not accept 100% responsibility. This needs to be looked into and sorted out on behalf of all of us.
What anoys me even more so is aparently tesco cannot go back furthur than 29th october, so cant find the 'recipt' for this transaction, therefore(acording to the dot com team) cant do anything about it. The only thing that can be done is if i make another purchase online. They will knock 'however much they choose' off that order.
    This is so infurianting.
Martin Lewis hunni, is there nothing we can do legally????

bumping, rather silly board to move this to imo?
  • This whole thing is so irritating. I agree that a letter of apology would at least make me feel a little better, but when I said that I would write to head office the rather smug man who was on my phone for 10 mins at 7.30pm the other night said 'I am calling from head office'. I get the feeling this one may be a lost cause and I'm just gonna have to swallow the charges.

I emailed the Terry Leahy email address and c.c'd several newspapers, had an email this morning saying it is being "dealt with" but no further response yet.

Me too, I think the cc'ing will get them moving. I know it did years ago when I had a big dispute with a utility company.

You could always email them a link to this thread and the "halifax & tesco" one in the bank and budgetting board

Just checked my email and have had a fob off email from customer service saying "Sir Terry" is away from the office and that they are not liable for the fees.

I've sent a reply (again cc'd - they didn't cc their reply ;) ) saying in that case i'll keep emailing until I get a proper explanation of why in this 24 hour society it a) wasn't sorted out quicker and b) when it became clear it would take a long time people were not warned.

I'll also send some letters in the post to make sure it gets through.

Did that before I read this so if they reply again i'll link the threads (unless anyone thinks that's a bad idea?)
