Tesco taking payment 3 months late - WARNING

Same thing just happened to me. I paid on the 24th of October and they took £75 today. As a result, I missed a credit card payment and will be charged by Barclays. Gonna call them tomorrow to complain, but can't see me getting anything back - I did spend that money, but how are you supposed to budget when shops will take money whenever they feel like it.0

How very odd that all purchases were made on the same day. A system error with Tesco perhaps? I hope they compensate the bank charges for you all.
(Off to check bank statement..)Cheer up. The worst is yet to come - Mark Twain0 -
SIL used to have a debit card and was forever going overdrawn, and obviously incurring charges. Surely they can stop people spending on them when they know there are pending payments that will take them overdrawn.
This is what i couldnt get through my head. And, this is why we have made this monumental misake! LloydsTSB ALWAYS earmark any payments you make on a debit card. Therefore, and most of the time i have £400 in my account, but only £100 'available'.....this makes sure i dont go over drawn! However, for some really weird reason the payment has not gone out on the day, like it is suposed to(acording to our local stores manager/tesco customer services/the dotcom team)soooooooo it hasnt been earmarked...which is why we thought it was still classed as available funds.....
Just got off the phone to our local delivery store and customer services. They are as gobsmacked as, i would imagine, myself and sammylou! Unfortunatly it is a dotcom problem and they arent in untill the morning. The store manager was brilliant tho bless him, he has said if the dotcom team havent gotten onto it by the time he is in tomorrow afternoon he will call me and get on their case.
I will not be laying the blame compleatly on them(as the above statment states)however i do not intend to lay down and take 100% of this as my fault:rolleyes:sorry if some of you dont agree with that....

I was thinking the same thing...cursing myself for both not bloody checking and shopping on the 24th!!!!
Compensation for bank charges would be lovely, at this time of year and so close to crimbo a hamper would be better!:rotfl:0 -
It is because of such problems log this that i keep a book with all my shopping and banking transactions put in as i go, by taking it off the total, as far as i am concerned the payment is taken. Then when i get my statement i cross reference and would be able to see at a glance any discrepancies like in the OP.
As an ex-bankrupt, it helps you keep full control of your money, so i highly recommend using this method to anybody. HTH.0 -
I also have just checked my bank account and found 2 transactions for Tesco and got worried about my card. Spoke to my local tesco customer service desk instore and found that the problem is nationwide due to thier finance partner not posting transactions on 24th October. This was the day the clocks went back and transactions were lost in the time change. I was told that it had only just come to light. Would have been good of Tesco to annouce that payments would now be taken. Did Tesco not know that millions of pounds was missing that weekend ? This will now put some families in a very poor position just before Christmas. I hope Tesco will make amends and send out club card vouchers to the value of peoples transactions as a way of an apology0

thanks for posting this. I can't remember if we were in Tesco on the 24th Oct or not, but I have all my till receipts (somewhere..) Years ago we got a shock from BT. A telephone bill arrived and it had an extra months worth of calls on it from many months before, their system had forgotten to charge everyone in this area. That was when telephone calls were expensive. Another thing happened when Woolwich became Barclays - we got a letter asking for £1200 odd to be agreed to be taken from our bank account, 6 months before they had put someone else's money in by mistake. I didn't notice because my husband used to pay in amounts like that from his firms petty cash refunds where he'd bought a pc for the office or something. Luckily we hadn't spent it...0

Don't you people ever check your bank statements? You should have noticed that you hadn't been charged back in October.
Oh shut up! Who made you parent?
Moving on, I had a similar problem with Boots last year and was told that companies are allowed to charge up to 6 months after the date of purchase. They did kindly refund it to me, however.0 -
Although you have spent the money in this situation as long as the card was not Maestro or SOLO, you can ask for a chargeback.
The retailer has an agreement with the bank. The retailer in this case Tesco asked for authorisation (this only applies were they did and not if the value was below a floor limit) to take money from your account and it was accepted it is "earmarked" because your bank had agreed to pay it out.
However, this authorisation drops off in less than 7 days with Visa and 30 days with Mastercard, as that is the time scale in which the retailer has to file the transaction and take the money under Visa and Mastercard Rules. After that point it is the retailer who is in default of their contract with the bank they use to process their card transactions. Technically any request for a chargeback would be successful, so that would reverse the situation and you would not have received charges.
Your bank did not take off the "earmark" for the good of their health, they did it because they were no longer contractually obliged to pay out the money and under no circumstance is charges for this acceptable (the problem here is front line bank staff dont know this, or will be told to tell you otherwise, but if you push and dispute the matter they will have no choice but to raise a chargeback).
The issue with the 6 year rule is only if they can find you and take you to court. But they would have to ask nicely for the money first as it was their error not yours. As this was an on-line issue they would have your name and address though but I am sure such a large company might write it off than go to the hassle of chasing you for it.0
